Chapter 10 - The Uninvited Guest

Stephanie froze, her hand still resting on the velvet hanger in the empty closet. Her breath caught in her throat as the heavy footsteps echoed closer, growing louder against the bare concrete of the hallway. The liquidators were supposed to have another hour before the locks engaged.
“Hello?” Stephanie called out, her voice trembling, carrying a pathetic mixture of fear and lingering arrogance. “You’re early. The lease doesn’t terminate for another sixty minutes. I’m packing my things.”
A shadow fell across the bedroom doorway. A man stepped into the empty room, but it wasn't a corporate liquidator in a crisp dark suit.
It was Marcus Vance—Charles’s estranged older cousin, a man whose face Stephanie had only ever seen in glossy tabloid magazines reporting on corporate lawsuits and offshore scandals. Marcus looked older than Charles, his face harder, marked by the bitter lines of a man who had spent his entire life fighting for an inheritance he never received. He wore an expensive wool trench coat, but his eyes were bloodshot and erratic.
Stephanie stepped backward out of the closet, clutching the plain black dress to her chest like a shield.
“Who are you?” she demanded, trying desperately to summon a fraction of her old authority. “You can’t be in here. This is private property.”
Marcus let out a harsh, barking laugh that echoed uncomfortably off the bare concrete walls.
“Private property?” Marcus sneered, taking a slow step toward her into the center of the empty bedroom. “Sweetheart, this entire building belongs to Vance Global. And right now, Vance Global is run entirely by my golden-boy cousin Charles, who just used your little wedding disaster as the ultimate excuse to liquidate every asset your family ever touched.”
Stephanie’s stomach plummeted. “What are you talking about?”
“I’m talking about collateral damage,” Marcus said, his voice dropping to a venomous whisper as he closed the distance between them. “Charles didn’t just ruin your father. He ruined my business partners, too. He used your little public meltdown in the cathedral as a smoke screen to execute a hostile takeover of my entire portfolio. He destroyed my life, and he used you to do it.”
Stephanie stared at him, horror dawning behind her eyes. Charles hadn’t just acted on impulse when she insulted his mother. He had baited her, pushed her into a position where her true colors would inevitably show, and then weaponized her arrogance to crush every single corporate enemy in his path in one fell swoop.
“He... he set me up?” Stephanie whispered, the words barely audible over the hum of the city outside.
“Of course he set you up!” Marcus laughed bitterly, grabbing a nearby metal pipe left behind by the contractors and smashing it against the concrete pillar with a deafening clang. “Charles knew exactly who you were after dating you for two months. He just needed the world to see it so he could legally torch your family’s crooked empire without a PR backlash. You were never his bride, Stephanie. You were his executioner’s axe.”

Before Stephanie could process the terrifying depth of Charles’s calculated betrayal, Marcus stepped directly in front of the doorway, blocking her only exit, his eyes wild and unstable as he pulled a heavy manila folder from his trench coat.
