Chapter 9 - The Empty Room

The heavy mahogany door of the master guest suite stood wide open, revealing a room that was entirely undisturbed except for one crucial detail: the bed was neatly made, and Lily was gone. Arthur stormed into the room, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white. Eleanor and Julian followed closely behind, wearing carefully rehearsed expressions of shock and concern.
“Search the entire grounds!” Arthur yelled into his lapel communicator, addressing the security team stationed outside. “Check the perimeter gates, the gardens, the pool house! If she isn’t found within ten minutes, I am calling the FBI!”
“Arthur, calm down,” Eleanor said, placing a gentle hand on his trembling arm. “Maybe she just got scared and wandered off. She’s a troubled child, used to living on the streets. Staying in a mansion must have terrified her.”
“She didn't wander off, Eleanor!” Arthur shouted, pulling away from her touch with a violence that shocked her. He pointed toward the bedside table. “Look at this!”
Resting on the mahogany nightstand was the small piece of frayed cloth that had wrapped the sapphire ring. But the ring itself was gone. And beside the cloth lay a handwritten note scrawled on hotel stationary. Arthur picked it up, his eyes scanning the crude block letters.
“If you ever want to see the girl alive again, stop investigating the past. Burn the adoption files. Drop the inheritance claim. Wait for our instructions.”
Julian stepped forward, peering over his father’s shoulder with wide, exaggerated eyes of disbelief.
“Dad, that’s… that’s a kidnapping ransom note! Who would take her?”
Arthur turned slowly, his gaze locking onto his son with a terrifying, piercing intensity.
“Only someone who knew she was here. Only someone who knew the DNA test was going to be positive. Only someone who had access to the master security override codes.” Arthur stepped right up to Julian, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “Codes that only you and your mother possess.”
Eleanor stepped in front of Julian defensively, her eyes flashing with anger.
“How dare you accuse your own family, Arthur! We were right here in the lab with you when the alarm went off!”
“You have accomplices, Eleanor,” Arthur said coldly, pulling his personal smartphone from his pocket. “And I don't need to guess who paid them. I’m calling the authorities right now.”
Before Arthur could swipe his screen, Julian lunged forward and knocked the phone from his father’s hand, sending it clattering across the marble floor.

“Don't do it, Dad!” Julian yelled, his carefully maintained facade finally crumbling into absolute desperation.
