Chapter 11 - The Federal Net

Agent Miller stepped fully into the master guest suite, her sharp eyes scanning the three members of the Sterling family with clinical precision. Two armed federal marshals flanked her left and right, their hands resting easily on their holstered sidearms. The atmosphere in the room shifted instantly from a private family dispute into a federal crime scene.
Eleanor’s composure finally fractured. The cool, calculating matriarch stumbled back against the heavy mahogany wardrobe, her manicured hands trembling.
“Federal task force?” Eleanor stammered, her voice pitching upward in panic. “On whose authority? This is a private family matter!”
“It stopped being a private family matter thirty years ago, Mrs. Sterling,” Agent Miller replied smoothly, pulling a thick case file from her leather briefcase. She flipped it open to reveal yellowed financial statements and certified police reports. “Our division has been quietly investigating the Sterling Corporation’s international shipping irregularities and offshore accounts for over six months. But an hour ago, an encrypted digital packet was automatically uploaded to our secure server from this very estate—containing proof of corporate embezzlement, fraudulent death certificates, and witness intimidation regarding the disappearance of Caroline Sterling.”
Arthur looked at Agent Miller, a grim understanding washing over his face. He didn't upload the files.
“Who sent it?” Arthur asked quietly.
“An anonymous digital drop,” Agent Miller answered, glancing briefly at the shattered smartphone on the marble floor. “Set with a dead-man’s switch. If the little girl’s biometric vitals ceased transmission, or if her location wasn't confirmed safe by dawn, the entire archive automatically routed to federal prosecutors.”
Julian spun around to face his mother, his eyes wide with stark terror.
“Mother! You said you destroyed all the physical and digital records years ago! Who else knew about the offshore accounts?”
Eleanor didn't answer. She stared blankly at the federal agent, her mind racing desperately to find a way out of a trap that had suddenly snapped shut around her.
“Agent Miller,” Arthur spoke up, stepping forward with absolute urgency. “My granddaughter, Lily, has been taken. My wife and son just confessed to having her locked in the old boathouse down by the private dock. You need to move tactical units down there immediately before they can relocate her.”
Agent Miller nodded sharply, raising her radio to her shoulder.
“Alpha Team, move on the boathouse at the private dock. Secure the child immediately. Use maximum caution.” She turned back to the marshals. “Place Eleanor and Julian Sterling under arrest for corporate fraud, kidnapping, and obstruction of justice.”
As the marshals stepped forward to snap heavy steel handcuffs onto Julian and Eleanor, Julian let out a desperate, furious cry, lunging toward his father.

“You set us up!” Julian screamed, fighting against the restraining grip of the federal agents. “You invited her here just to destroy us!”
