Chapter 11 - The Weight of a Seven-Year-Old

The heavy Persian rug muffled the violent thud of the two men crashing to the floor, but the struggle was immediate and brutal. Marcus snarled, his fingers clawing desperately at Julian’s throat, trying to force the barrel of his silenced pistol back down toward Julian’s chest. Julian used his uninjured right arm to pin Marcus’s wrist against the hardwood floor, ignoring the hot, spreading wetness of blood soaking through his tuxedo shirt from the shoulder wound.

“You’re… going… to prison,” Julian grunted between clenched teeth, exerting every ounce of his strength to keep the gun away from his face.

Marcus laughed wildly, his eyes wide and manic beneath his slicked-back hair. “With what evidence, Julian? You’re the one holding the smoking gun over a dead billionaire!”

Clara scrambled forward, her white wedding gown soaked with dust and blood as she searched frantically across the floor for Julian’s dropped firearm. Her fingers brushed against the cold steel handle just as a heavy leather-bound volume slid off the shelf above and crashed down beside her.

Before Clara could lift the weapon to intervene, a small, lavender-clad shadow darted across the room with terrifying speed. Lily didn't scream, she didn't cry—she simply charged forward like a tiny linebacker, launching her full weight directly onto Marcus’s back.

Marcus let out a sharp, choked gasp of air as seven years of stubborn childhood momentum slammed into his spine, driving the wind completely from his lungs and breaking his hold on the pistol long enough for Julian to twist his arm behind his back with a vicious crack.

Julian didn't hesitate. He delivered a swift, heavy blow to the side of Marcus’s jaw with his free hand, sending the traitor’s head bouncing off the floorboards. Marcus’s eyes rolled back, his body going instantly limp as unconsciousness took him.

Julian collapsed backward, panting heavily, clutching his bleeding shoulder as crimson stained the white fabric of his torn dress shirt. He stared up at the ceiling, his chest heaving, listening to the roaring sound of his own pulse in his ears.

Clara dropped to her knees beside him, her hands trembling as she pressed her white veil against his bleeding wound to stem the flow. “Jules! Jules, look at me. Stay with me.”

“I’m… I’m fine,” Julian wheezed, breaking into a weak cough. He turned his head to look at Lily, who was standing over the unconscious CFO, casually dusting off the hem of her lavender dress as if she had just stepped off a playground slide.

“You fight ugly,” Lily observed critically, looking down at Marcus’s unconscious body with a look of mild disappointment. “My uncle fights like a bear in a trap.”

Clara let out a hysterical, breathless laugh that teetered dangerously close to tears. She looked up at Lily, her eyes shining with fierce admiration. “Where on earth did you learn to tackle like that?”

“Rugby practice on YouTube,” Lily replied simply, adjusting the collar of her dress. “My coach says leverage beats mass every single time.”

Julian groaned softly, managing a weak smirk as he leaned his head back against Clara’s lap. “Remind me… never to argue with her about allowance again.”

“Agreed,” Clara whispered, pressing a tender kiss to his damp forehead. She looked back toward the open safe and the flashing red laptop screen on the desk. “Jules… look at the screen.”

Julian forced his eyes open, glancing past the scattered books and papers toward the executive desk. The encrypted chat window had stopped typing, replaced by a bold green notification box that made his heart leap into his throat.

“Transfer intercepted. Cayman accounts frozen by Federal Reserve automated protocol. Master key verified.”

Marcus’s corporate empire had just collapsed in real-time, and the hardware key resting in Lily’s small palm was the only thing standing between total ruin and absolute victory. But before they could even begin to process their survival, the faint, distant sound of flashing red and blue lights began to paint the high arched windows of the mansion with an ominous, flickering glow.
