Chapter 10 - The Muffled Shot

The heavy silence in the third-floor study stretched like a taut wire, vibrating with lethal tension. Julian remained on one knee, his body positioned protectively in front of Clara and Lily, his hand steadying the grip of his firearm as he aimed directly at Marcus’s chest.
“You miscalculated, Marcus,” Julian said, his voice dropping into a cold, lethal register. “The safe is open. I have the hardware key and the audit trail linking every cent of the embezzlement directly to your Cayman accounts. Even if you pull that trigger, the federal authorities already have an automated dead-man’s switch linked to this IP address.”
Marcus didn't flinch. He didn't even blink. He let out a low, smooth chuckle that sounded entirely out of place in a room smelling of copper and death. “Julian, my dear friend, do you really think I’d spend five years engineering this corporate takeover without securing the perimeter first? Your phone has been disconnected from the cellular grid since we entered the driveway. That dead-man’s switch of yours? It’s currently transmitting straight into a dead-air buffer.”
Clara gasped softly, her hand flying to her mouth as she realized the terrifying truth of their isolation.
Marcus took a slow, deliberate step into the room, his silenced pistol never wavering from Julian’s heart. “Arthur was a stubborn old dinosaur. He figured out my plan three days ago when he caught me reviewing the subsidiary ledgers. He threatened to cut me out of the will, so I helped him along a little bit. A touch of potassium chloride in his evening scotch—completely untoxicated by morning, looks like a natural cardiac arrest. Very clean, very professional.”
“You murdered him,” Julian said, venom dripping from every syllable.
“I reorganized management,” Marcus corrected smoothly. “Just like you’re about to reorganize your corporeal existence. Now, drop the gun, Julian. Place it gently beside your grandfather’s desk, and let’s make this neat. I’ll make sure Clara and the little brat get a generous alimony package out of the remaining liquidation funds. They can live comfortably in the south of France.”
“I’d rather burn in hell than take a cent of your stolen money,” Clara spat, stepping out from behind Julian with a fierce, burning defiance in her eyes that caught Marcus completely off guard.
Marcus’s polite smile faltered for a fraction of a second, a flicker of genuine irritation crossing his features. “A romantic to the bitter end. How tragically cliché.”
He adjusted his grip on the silenced pistol, his finger tightening slightly on the trigger as he prepared to squeeze off a subsonic round that would end Julian’s life without waking the estate.
Suddenly, a small, high-pitched mechanical whirring sound echoed from the dark corner near the mahogany bookshelves—a sound like a child’s motorized toy winding up its spring.
Marcus glanced sideways for a split second, distracted by the noise.
It was all the opening Julian needed. With explosive speed, Julian lunged forward, sweeping his arm outward to knock Marcus’s barrel upward just as a muffled pfft echoed through the room. The subsonic bullet tore through the fabric of Julian’s left shoulder, burning hot like a searing iron, but he didn't stop. He slammed his shoulder directly into Marcus’s chest, driving the traitor backward against the heavy oak bookshelf.
