Chapter 9

Panic in the corporate suite quickly curdled into a desperate, calcified determination within Arthur Vance. Refusing to accept defeat, the aging patriarch ordered everyone out of the boardroom, leaving only Marcus standing nervously near the door. Arthur stared at the financial dossier spread across the polished table, his mind racing through endless scenarios of damage control, corporate survival, and bruised pride. For decades, Arthur had believed that wealth and power gave him absolute immunity from consequences, but now he faced an opponent who not only matched his financial standing but held the moral high ground in every conceivable way. "Marcus," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, cold whisper that commanded immediate attention despite his age. "Get me his address. Not his work address—his home address. I am going to settle this face-to-face." Marcus tried to interject, warning his uncle that approaching Liam with demands or insults would only accelerate their corporate ruin, but Arthur waved him down with a furious swipe of his hand. Pride blinded the old man; he could not fathom that a father would not trade his pride for a piece of the Vance empire. Meanwhile, miles away in the peaceful apartment, Emily and Liam were enjoying a quiet Saturday morning with Toby, who was busy building an elaborate Lego castle on the living room rug. The atmosphere was light and filled with genuine warmth, entirely detached from the corporate earthquake happening downtown. When a sudden, heavy knocking echoed against their front door, the peaceful quiet was instantly shattered. Emily paused, looking toward the entryway with a furrowed brow, while Liam stood up slowly, wiping flour from his hands after helping Toby bake pancakes. As Liam opened the heavy wooden door, he was greeted not by a courier or a neighbor, but by the imposing figure of Arthur Vance himself. The old man stood in the doorway, his posture rigid, his face flushed with a mixture of desperate pride and suppressed fury, looking out of place in the humble apartment hallway. Without waiting for an invitation, Arthur pushed past Liam, stepping directly into their living room and casting a harsh, critical eye over the modest furnishings. Little did Arthur know, his desperate gamble was about to deliver the final, crushing blow to his fragile illusion of control.
