Chapter 3

Inside the towering glass skyscraper of Vance Global, Arthur Vance sat at the head of the polished obsidian conference board, listening to his chief financial officer rattle off quarterly earnings reports. The numbers were strong, yet a lingering sense of irritation gnawed at Arthur’s mind. Despite his outward display of absolute confidence, the memory of Emily’s parting words—Remember this, dad. When the truth reaches you.—bothered him more than he cared to admit. He had spent his entire life dominating industries, crushing competitors, and bending people to his will through sheer financial dominance. The idea that his daughter, whom he had raised to appreciate only the finest things in life, could willingly choose a life of financial struggle with a supposed nobody infuriated him. During a brief recess in the meeting, Arthur summoned Marcus Vance, his ambitious nephew and presumptive heir to the corporate empire, into his private office. Marcus entered with a slick smile, wearing a tailored charcoal suit that cost more than Liam's entire wardrobe, eager to please his uncle and secure his position. Arthur poured himself a glass of aged bourbon, swirling the amber liquid before speaking in a low, gravelly tone. "Marcus, I want you to keep an eye on Emily and that husband of hers. Find out how they are surviving. I want to know if they are drowning in debt yet." Marcus nodded eagerly, sensing an opportunity to further solidify his standing by exploiting his cousin's perceived misfortunes. Little did Marcus know, his corporate espionage would lead him down a rabbit hole of staggering revelations that would shake the very foundations of the Vance Corporation. Over the next few weeks, Marcus assigned a private investigator to track Liam and Emily's daily movements, expecting to find eviction notices, unpaid utility bills, and desperate pleas for financial assistance. Instead, the initial reports trickled in with confusing details that made no sense to the corporate shark. Liam's credit score was pristine, his rental payments were made months in advance, and a mysterious series of wire transfers from anonymous venture capital firms kept flowing into accounts linked to Liam's pre-marriage holdings. Marcus grew increasingly paranoid, realizing that the man Arthur had dismissed as a broke nobody possessed financial footprints that extended far beyond the simple logistics job he currently held. As Marcus dug deeper, the illusion of Liam's poverty began to unravel, revealing a complex web of wealth, intellect, and deliberate deception that Arthur Vance was entirely unprepared to handle.
