Chapter 4: An Invitation to the Boardroom

Three days after the collapse of his empire, Julian received a thick, cream-colored envelope delivered by hand to his front desk. It bore no return address, only his name written in a precise, elegant cursive that he recognized instantly. Elena’s handwriting. With trembling fingers, he tore open the envelope to reveal a single heavy cardstock invitation: a summons to the executive boardroom at Sterling Industries for an extraordinary shareholder meeting. The time listed was 2:00 PM that very afternoon. There was no polite greeting, no sign-off, just the cold, corporate directive. Julian stared at the card, his pride warring with a desperate need to understand what game Elena was playing. Was she bringing him in to publicly humiliate him in front of the board of directors, or was there a deeper chess move at play? He dressed carefully, pulling on the same sharp dark suit he had worn at the lounge, determined to face whatever execution she had planned with his dignity intact. When his town car pulled up to the grand marble entrance of Sterling Industries, the media circus had already begun. Microphones were thrust toward his window, flashbulbs popping like lightning storms as security guards pushed the aggressive reporters back. Julian stepped out of the vehicle, his face an impassive mask of corporate calm, ignoring the shouting journalists who screamed questions about his sudden fall from grace and his impending bankruptcy. Inside the lobby, the private elevator whisked him up to the fortieth floor, bypassing the bustling bullpen straight to the executive suite. The double doors of the boardroom were ajar, casting a warm stream of light across the polished hallway. As Julian stepped inside, he saw that the room was packed with senior executives, legal counsel, and board members who had once bowed to his every directive. At the head of the long mahogany table sat Elena. She wore a tailored charcoal pantsuit, her long dark hair falling in soft waves over her shoulders, her expression completely unreadable. She did not look like a heartbroken ex-wife; she looked like a sovereign taking her throne. As Julian entered, the low murmurs of the board members died away instantly, plunging the massive room into a heavy, suffocating silence. Elena slowly raised her eyes from a leather-bound dossier, fixing her steady, piercing gaze directly on him. "Julian," she said softly, her voice carrying clearly across the silent room. "Thank you for joining us. Please, take a seat at the very end of the table."
