Chapter 13: The Last Temptation

Julian watched Marcus Vance with a quiet, steady gaze, letting the silence stretch between them until the nervous accountant began to squirm in his folding chair. "I’m listening, Marcus," Julian said evenly, his tone devoid of the old corporate hunger. "Though I should warn you, my interest in corporate espionage died the day I signed my exit papers." Vance waved a hand dismissively, pulling a folded manila folder from inside his trench coat and slamming it down onto the wooden desk. "Just look at the files, Julian! This isn't about corporate espionage anymore. It’s about survival. Weeks before Arthur Sterling passed away, he discovered that Elena’s inner circle—her current chief operating officer and her lead legal counsel—were actively plotting a quiet hostile takeover from within. They used forged signatures to dilute her voting shares while she was distracted by our divorce proceedings." Julian didn't touch the folder. He kept his hands folded on the desk, looking directly into Vance’s frantic eyes. "Let me guess," Julian said softly. "You want me to take these files back to New York, use my old connections to rally a faction of the board, and help you mount a counter-offensive against her executive team." Vance nodded eagerly, a manic gleam in his eye. "Exactly! With my inside knowledge of the accounts and your strategic mind, we can force Elena to cut us back into the fold. She’ll have to give us executive positions and equity stakes just to keep the scandal from destroying her merger." Julian let out a quiet sigh, leaning back in his chair as he shook his head slowly. "Marcus, you still don't get it, do you?" Vance blinked, confused. "Get what?" "Elena isn't just a beneficiary of her father’s will," Julian said, his voice carrying a quiet, absolute certainty. "She’s a strategist. Do you genuinely believe that a woman who outmaneuvered both of us while we were busy plotting behind her back didn't already know about her COO and her legal counsel?" Vance froze, his mouth slightly open. "What are you talking about?" "I’m talking about the fact that those forged signatures you’re holding in that folder aren't a secret leak," Julian explained calmly. "They’re bait. She’s letting them walk right into her trap so she can consolidate absolute, uncontested control of the entire conglomerate in a single stroke. If you walk into her office with those files, you won't be saving her; you’ll just be volunteering to be the next piece she sweeps off the board." Vance stared at Julian, the color draining entirely from his face. The manic energy that had fueled his frantic trip upstate vanished instantly, replaced by the crushing realization that he was entirely out of his depth in a world governed by apex predators.
