Chapter 2

The heavy metal door of the cruiser felt cool against Maya’s shoulder as Sheriff Miller shoved her unceremoniously into the back seat. The scent of stale coffee and disinfectant filled the enclosed space, reminding her of the cold, clinical nature of the system she had spent the last three years trying to reform. Through the plexiglass partition, she watched Miller pace along the edge of the driveway, pulling a weathered leather notebook from his breast pocket. He flipped the pages with rough, impatient fingers, his lips moving silently as he reviewed whatever fabricated narrative he had constructed to justify this unlawful detention.
Maya shifted her weight, the cold steel of the handcuffs pressing painfully against her lower back. She refused to let fear dictate her thoughts. As an investigator for the state’s Office of Professional Standards, her entire career was built on dismantling corrupt local departments that operated like personal fiefdoms. Oak Ridge was supposed to be a quiet community, a retirement haven for weary civil servants, but the glaring discrepancies in the county’s annual budget reports had drawn her eye months ago. She had rented the pale yellow colonial house behind her just two weeks prior under a pseudonym to conduct a quiet, off-the-books surveillance operation. Miller clearly had no idea that the woman he had just assaulted on her own lawn held the direct authorization of the state attorney general to audit his precinct.
Outside, the cruiser’s engine hummed a low, steady bass note. Miller finished his call on the department radio, his voice a low rumble of static and authority. He walked around to the driver's side, opened the door, and slid behind the wheel without looking back at her. The interior lights flickered on, casting sharp shadows across his deeply lined face. He adjusted his rearview mirror so his eyes locked directly onto hers, a silent intimidation tactic meant to break her composure before they even reached the station house.
"Quiet ride to the county jail, Ms. Vance," Miller said, his tone flat, devoid of any professional courtesy. "Let's see how smart you feel once the magistrate reads your trespassing charges."

"You are digging a hole you will never climb out of, Tom," Maya replied, her voice disturbingly calm. "Every minute you keep these cuffs on me is another count of official misconduct added to the federal indictment."
Miller’s hands tightened on the steering wheel, his knuckles turning white against the dark leather. For a fraction of a second, his composure slipped, revealing a deep, consuming panic. But he quickly recovered, shifting the gear into drive with unnecessary force. The cruiser’s tires crunched sharply over the gravel driveway as they pulled away from the curb, leaving the quiet suburban street behind. Maya stared out the side window, watching the familiar oak trees blur into a green streak as they headed toward a reckoning that neither of them could stop.
