Chapter 3

“Amanda Vance?”
The voice belonged to a tall man in a charcoal suit, stepping uninvited into the foyer with a second agent flanking his left side. His badge caught the hallway light, gleaming with federal authority.
Claire stood frozen by the kitchen island, still holding the wet data chip between her fingers, while Amanda backed away until her shoulders hit the pantry door. The sudden arrival of law enforcement shattered whatever domestic illusion remained in the suburban household.
“I’m Agent Miller, Homeland Security Investigations,” the man announced, his eyes sweeping the kitchen before locking onto the charred remains in the sink and the wet chip in Claire’s hand. “We’ve been tracking an unauthorized diplomatic data transfer routed through fraudulent travel documents issued out of this zip code. Ma’am, put the microchip down on the counter, slowly.”
Claire immediately dropped the chip onto the granite surface, holding her hands up in surrender. “I didn’t know it was there. She just burned my passport. I was leaving for Paris tomorrow, and she—she destroyed it.”
Agent Miller shifted his gaze to Amanda, whose breathing had turned shallow and rapid. “Mrs. Vance, you are currently under investigation for conspiracy to commit international espionage and violation of federal travel document laws. Step away from the pantry and place your hands where we can see them.”
“Espionage?” Amanda let out a breathless, hysterical shriek, abandoning her composed demeanor entirely. “Are you out of your mind? I’m a stay-at-home mother! Look at this house! Look at my kids upstairs! I don’t know anything about microchips or espionage!”
“Your digital signature was used to encrypt the routing protocol embedded in that passport’s laminate backing three days ago,” the second agent stated calmly, stepping forward with a digital tablet displaying a cascade of code and IP addresses. “The device was registered to your home network, using your personal laptop while your husband was away on business.”
Claire felt the room spin. Her mind raced backward, connecting terrifying dots she had previously ignored. David, Amanda’s husband, hadn't just “walked away” last month for a routine business trip. He hadn't left a simple domestic dispute. He was an international trade negotiator who specialized in defense tech acquisitions. And Amanda—sweet, controlling, suburban Amanda—had somehow woven Claire’s international ambitions directly into a criminal smuggling operation.
“You used me,” Claire whispered, staring at her sister with a mixture of horror and profound heartbreak. “You didn't just want me to babysit. You needed a clean mule with a legitimate French fellowship to walk through customs carrying classified hardware.”
“Shut up, Claire! Just shut your mouth!” Amanda screamed, tears finally spilling over her cheeks as the first agent stepped forward and snapped steel handcuffs around her wrists.

As they hauled Amanda toward the front door, Agent Miller turned back to look at Claire, his expression grave. “Ms. Vance, you cannot leave the country. In fact, until we clear your name, you are officially a person of interest in a federal security breach.”
Before Claire could utter a single word in defense, the heavy front door clicked shut, leaving her alone in the quiet kitchen with a ruined passport, a federal investigation, and two sleeping children upstairs who had no idea their lives had just imploded.
