Chapter 9: The Siege at Dawn

The knocking on the front door was deliberate, slow, and terrifyingly calm—the knock of someone who knew exactly who was inside and possessed all the time in the world.

Clara motioned for Julian to stay back with Maya, who was beginning to stir fitfully on the sofa, murmuring frightened words in her sleep. Clara crept silently toward the front hallway, peering through the peephole of the heavy wooden door. Through the distorted glass, the silhouette of a broad-shouldered man in a wet trench coat was visible under the orange glare of the porch light. Marcus had found them.

"Open the door, Ms. Vance," Marcus’s muffled voice carried clearly through the wood, smooth and devoid of any threat. "We know the child is in there. There is no point in dragging this out and making things harder for everyone involved."

Clara gripped a heavy iron fireplace poker resting beside the wall, her knuckles white. "You have no jurisdiction here, Marcus. Get off my property before I call the federal authorities."

"Federal authorities?" Marcus chuckled softly, a dry, dismissive sound. "Ms. Vance, Mr. Sterling holds considerable sway over local and federal oversight committees. Do you really want to risk your entire investigative career and this little journalist sanctuary of yours over a custody dispute that legally belongs to the Sterling estate?"

Julian stepped forward into the hallway, gently placing a hand on Clara’s arm to lower the poker. His eyes were fixed on the door. He was tired of running, tired of hiding behind locked doors and waiting for the axe to fall.

"Let him talk, Clara," Julian said quietly.

Julian stepped up to the door and unlocked the deadbolt with a sharp, echoing click. He pulled the door open just wide enough to block the threshold, staring coldly at Marcus, who stood there under the dripping eaves with his hands casually tucked into his coat pockets.

"You’re wasting your time, Marcus," Julian said, his voice steady and unyielding. "Tell Arthur that if he sends anyone else, I won't just run. I will tear his entire legacy down to the studs."

Marcus tilted his head, studying Julian with a mixture of professional respect and genuine amusement. "Mr. Sterling doesn't want a war, Julian. He wants what is his. The girl carries the family name in her bloodline. You are merely a temporary caretaker who forgot his place."

"She is my daughter," Julian hissed, stepping closer. "And if you or Arthur ever come near her again, I promise you won't walk away."

Marcus smiled thinly, stepping back into the rain. "Stubbornness is a dangerous trait, Julian. Enjoy your night."
