Chapter 5: The Face in the Mirror

The diner was nearly empty at this late hour, smelling faintly of roasted coffee beans, frying grease, and lemon bleach. A lone waitress with tired eyes and a kind smile pointed them toward a secluded booth near the back, away from the drafts of the front door. Julian wrapped a spare jacket around Maya’s shoulders, watching with quiet relief as she nibbled slowly on a piece of grilled cheese sandwich and sipped warm chamomile tea.

Julian went to the small restroom near the back to wash his face and inspect the damage from the earlier confrontation. The fluorescent lights overhead buzzed with an irritating hum. He braced his hands on the edges of the porcelain sink and stared at his reflection in the mirror.

The bruise around his left eye had deepened into a mottled palette of purple and yellow. His dark hair was damp and tousled from the rain, clinging to his forehead. But it wasn't the physical injuries that caught his attention; it was the look in his eyes. The easygoing, patient man who had tolerated three years of psychological erosion in the name of peace was completely gone. In his place stood someone harder, sharper, and utterly determined to protect his child at any cost.

He turned on the tap and splashed cold water over his face, letting the shock of it clear the last remnants of fog from his mind. He couldn't just run and hide; running meant living in fear forever, constantly looking over his shoulder while Arthur’s legal hounds tracked them down. They needed leverage. They needed to expose what really happened behind the closed doors of that mansion.

When Julian returned to the booth, Maya was looking much brighter, her small blue eyes blinking sleepily as the warmth of the diner finally chased away the chill of the night. She looked up at him and offered a small, hesitant smile that pierced straight through his armor.

"Are we going home, Daddy?" she asked softly.

Julian knelt down beside the booth, taking her small hand in his, careful to avoid the scratched skin on her arm. "We are going to find a new home, sweetie. A real home, where nobody ever hurts you again. Do you trust me?"

Maya nodded firmly, squeezing his finger with her tiny hand. "I trust you, Daddy."

Just as Julian stood up to pay the bill, the bell above the diner’s front door chimed. A tall man in a dark trench coat walked in, shaking the rain from his umbrella. He didn't look like a local regular. His eyes scanned the room with practiced efficiency before locking directly onto Julian. A chill ran down Julian’s spine. They had found them faster than he had ever feared possible.
