Chapter 8 - The Diverting Shadow

The heavy crash echoed off the stone foundation walls, rattling the stacks of old municipal records and causing the guard to spin sharply away from Elena’s hiding spot.
"What was that?" the guard muttered, his flashlight beam slicing wildly across the dark basement toward the far corner near the boiler room.
He raised his weapon, his boots crunching rapidly over the debris as he advanced cautiously across the room, shouting into the gloom.
"Identify yourself! Stay where you are or I will open fire!"
Elena didn't waste a single heartbeat.
While the guard was distracted, she scrambled out from behind the crates and sprinted across the open stone floor toward the hidden staircase leading up to the parlor.
As she reached the base of the wooden steps, she glanced back into the dimness and saw a frail, hunched figure slipping quickly behind a stack of iron shelving near the coal chute.
It was Marcus.
He had survived the explosion at the mill and followed her here, creating the crucial diversion that saved her from being discovered.
Before she could process his presence, she was already pulling herself up the uncarpeted stairs, keeping her footsteps light and swift against the creaking wood.
She reached the heavy oak door at the top of the landing, pressing her ear gently against the grain.
Inside, Arthur’s voice was raised in frustration.
"Fools! It’s probably just a stray deer or a frozen branch hitting the generator," Arthur snapped, turning his back to the door as he paced across the Persian rug.
"Focus on the children. When Elena walks through that front door, I want the contracts ready for her signature."
Maya’s voice piped up, small and defiant, ringing clearly through the thick oak barrier.
"My mom is never going to sign anything for a thief like you!"
A sharp, stinging slap echoed through the room, followed immediately by a sharp gasp from Maya.
The maternal protective instinct inside Elena instantly dissolved all caution, turning her blood into liquid fire.

She gripped the brass handle of the parlor door, twisted it with a sudden, violent motion, and shoved the heavy portal wide open, stepping into the golden light of the room with murder in her eyes.
