Chapter 13 - The Unforeseen Variable

The harsh, metallic squawk of the federal radio pierced the quiet stillness of the parlor, cutting through the lingering tension of Miller’s arrest.
“Alpha-Team Leader to Command, we have a critical breach at the secondary municipal facility. The secure archive vault has been remotely wiped, and an unauthorized extraction vehicle is heading outbound on Route 114 toward the state border.”
Agent Ramos spun around, her face hardening into an expression of absolute disbelief.
"Wiped?" she muttered, pressing the comms unit on her shoulder.
"That's impossible. The physical servers are locked down under triple-redundant encryption. Who has the override codes?"
“Unknown, Agent Ramos. But the digital signature matches an administrator account belonging to... Arthur’s legal counsel, Vanessa Vance.”
Elena’s heart skipped a beat.
Vanessa.
While everyone had been focused on Arthur’s theatrical arrest in the Victorian parlor, the blonde woman had slipped away through the French balcony doors during the chaos of the short circuit, making her way to a backup communications relay hidden somewhere on the lodge's expansive property.
She hadn't just been a superficial corporate brand ambassador; she was the architect of the syndicate's financial network, and she was making a run for the international border with every dollar they had stolen from the city.
"She's heading for the private airstrip behind the timber mill," Elena said quickly, stepping forward with absolute conviction in her voice.
"There's an underground maintenance tunnel connecting the mill basement directly to the private hangar on the riverbank. That's how they moved the slush funds without leaving a paper trail on the highway toll cameras."
Agent Ramos looked at Elena, assessing her grit and unwavering resolve in a fraction of a second before making a decisive executive choice.
"Take the kids and stay with the medical transport unit," Ramos commanded, her tone leaving no room for argument.
"My tactical teams will secure the airstrip."
"No," Elena replied, her voice ringing with cold, unyielding authority as she gently handed a sleeping Leo over to the care of a trusted paramedic.
"I walked into that dining room tonight letting them treat my children like corporate props. I watched them destroy my husband’s life to protect their bottom line. I am going to see this to the very end."
Agent Ramos stared at her for a long moment, then gave a sharp, appreciative nod.
"Grab a tactical jacket from the supply kit in the hall. We ride in five minutes."
Ten minutes later, a convoy of unmarked federal SUVs tore down the unplowed timber road, cutting through the blinding blizzard with sirens silent and high beams slicing through the whiteout.
They reached the perimeter of the abandoned timber mill just as the distinctive, high-pitched whine of a twin-engine turboprop engine began to spool up against the howling wind in the distance.
Through the blowing snow, the illuminated runway lights of the private airfield blinked into life along the frozen riverbank.
As the federal vehicles screeched to a halt near the hangar entrance, the heavy iron hangar doors began to slide open mechanically, revealing the sleek silver fuselage of a private jet sitting on the tarmac, its propellers spinning with blinding, lethal speed.

Standing on the rolling metal stairs leading up to the cabin door was Vanessa, clutching a heavy leather satchel to her chest as she turned to look back at the approaching convoy with a look of desperate, unhinged defiance, while her smartphone flashed a countdown timer counting down the final seconds before total digital erasure.
