Chapter 8 - The Descent Into Reality

The floorboards vanished beneath their feet, replaced not by a dark basement, but by an endless expanse of swirling, luminescent white fog. There was no gravity here, only the sensation of falling backward through a tunnel of flashing images, fragments of memories, and half-formed conversations from ten years of 반복되는 loops.

Claire clutched Marcus's hand tightly as they plummeted through the digital ether. Above them, Julian and Elena were screaming, their forms stretching and distorting into streaks of maroon and blue light before dissolving entirely into the rushing stream of data.

"Hold on!" Marcus shouted over the roaring wind of the collapsing simulation.

"I am holding on!" Claire called back, a strange sense of liberation washing over her. For the first time in a decade, her heart was beating not because an algorithm commanded it, but because she was genuinely afraid of what lay at the bottom.

The white light suddenly flared with blinding intensity, accompanied by the sharp, deafening sound of shattering glass and heavy oak doors slamming shut. The rushing wind died instantly, replaced by the damp, heavy scent of cedar, old paper, and rain against windowpanes.

Claire gasped, her eyes flying open. She wasn't lying on a shag carpet in a high-tech smart home. She was lying flat on her back on a cold, dusty parquet floor, staring up at a vaulted wooden ceiling adorned with intricate Victorian moldings.

"Claire?"

The voice was ragged, choked with a grief so profound it felt heavy in the air.

Claire turned her head slowly. Kneeling beside her was a younger version of Marcus—not the polished executive in the grey suit, but a frantic young man wearing a blood-stained linen shirt, his hands trembling as he pressed a clean handkerchief against the back of her head.

"Marcus?" she whispered, her voice rough and unused.

"Don't move, don't move," Marcus sobbed, tears spilling freely down his cheeks. "The ambulance is on the way. Julian... Julian ran out the back door after he pushed you."

Claire looked around. There was no coffee table. No Elena in a maroon dress. Just the grand staircase with its sweeping mahogany banister, looming ominously in the dim twilight of an autumn evening ten years in the past.
