Chapter 10 - The Conductor's Ledger

Detective Miller stepped into the foyer, his leather shoes clicking against the parquet floor with deliberate, unhurried precision. He looked down at Claire, then over at Marcus holding the recovered flash drive, and finally toward the open study door where Julian had made his escape just moments before.

"You're making good time, Marcus," Miller said, his gravelly voice cutting cleanly through the wailing sirens outside. "Though I see you still haven't learned how to secure a perimeter."

Marcus instinctively stepped in front of Claire, shielding her with his body. "Who are you? The local precinct hasn't even arrived yet."

Miller reached into his wet trench coat and pulled out a leather wallet, flipping open a silver badge that bore no state seal, only a string of alphanumeric digits identical to the ones scrolling across the underground console in the simulation.

"I'm not from the local precinct," Miller said calmly. "I'm the system administrator for the baseline reality. And that flash drive in your hand contains more than just financial records, Marcus. It's the master key to every backup node Julian set up across the county."

Claire pushed past Marcus, standing fully on her own two feet despite the throbbing pain in her head. She looked directly into Miller's tired, knowing eyes.

"The simulation wasn't an accident, was it?" Claire asked, her voice dangerously quiet. "You let Julian build the loop. You wanted to see if we would choose a different ending."

Miller offered a faint, tired smile. "Humanity is notoriously stubborn, Claire. People will repeat the same mistakes for centuries if they think they can control the outcome. Julian wanted a world where he never got caught. You wanted a world where you never got hurt. But reality doesn't accommodate comfort."

Outside, the screech of police cruiser tires echoed in the driveway, followed by the heavy slam of car doors and shouted orders. The red and blue lights pulsed brighter against the tall windows.

Miller stepped closer, lowering his voice to a harsh whisper. "Julian is heading for the old boathouse by the lake. He has a satellite uplink hidden there to transmit the patent data offshore. If he hits that transmission button before we lock the signal, the loop resets permanently—and this time, there won't be an escape hatch."

Marcus gripped the flash drive tightly, his knuckles turning white. He looked down at Claire, then back at Miller.

"Then we don't wait for the local police," Marcus said grimly. "We finish this ourselves."
