Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Basement

The two security guards moved with terrifying precision. Before Julian could even lift his hands to defend himself, one of them slammed him hard against the stainless-steel side of his food cart, wrenching his arms behind his back with bone-crushing force. A cold click of steel echoed in the afternoon air as handcuffs clamped tightly around his wrists.
"Get your hands off me!" Julian screamed, kicking backward, his boot connecting with empty air. "You can't just snatch people off the street in broad daylight! People are watching!"
He scanned the park. Dozens of pedestrians were walking past, yet miraculously, no one made a sound, no one stopped, and no one pulled out a phone to record the abduction. It was as if an invisible bubble had formed around them, mutating the bustling city into a silent, indifferent audience of statues.
Arthur didn't even try to fight. He slumped forward against his wooden cart, his frail body trembling uncontrollably as the second guard grabbed him by the collar of his plaid shirt and hauled him up effortlessly. The white envelope slipped from Arthur's grasp again, the thick stack of hundred-dollar bills scattering across the dirty pavement once more, ignored by everyone.
"You're making a mistake, Victoria," Arthur choked out, his voice raspy and breathless as he was dragged toward the open door of the black luxury car. "Whatever you think we did... the statute of limitations ran out years ago. You can't just—"
"Statute of limitations?" Victoria interrupted, stepping closer to Arthur until she was standing just inches from his terrified, flour-covered face. She reached out and gently patted his cheek with the back of her gloved hand, the gesture dripping with mock affection. "Arthur, dear. You can't put a time limit on vengeance when the fire never truly went out. You left me to burn, and I built an empire out of the ashes. Now, we're going back to where it all started. The 4th Street basement."
Julian felt a cold shiver run straight down his spine. The 4th Street basement. The abandoned textile warehouse that had burned to the ground a decade and a half ago. Everyone in the city knew the block had been completely demolished years ago to make way for a modern high-rise development. There was nothing left there except concrete foundations and ghosts.
"The building is gone, Victoria," Julian yelled, struggling against the unyielding grip of the guard holding him. "There's nothing down there! What are you playing at?"
Victoria turned her head slowly, her amber eyes locking onto Julian with a gaze so intense it felt as though she were trying to burn holes straight through his skull. "Oh, Julian. You underestimate the patience of a survivor. I didn't let the city demolish that foundation. I bought the land plot by plot, brick by brick, and I rebuilt the basement underneath the new skyscraper. Exactly as it was. Down to the heavy steel door. Down to the deadbolts you locked from the outside."
A deep, visceral terror gripped Julian’s chest, squeezing the air from his lungs until his vision began to blur at the edges. He looked past Victoria to the black luxury car, where Arthur was already being shoved roughly into the leather backseat.
"You're insane," Julian whispered, the fight completely draining out of him. "You're actually insane."
"No, Julian," Victoria said softly, turning away as the guards shoved Julian toward the vehicle, forcing him to duck his head to avoid hitting the doorframe. "I'm just a meticulous accountant. And today, I'm balancing the books."

As the heavy armored door of the luxury car slammed shut with a dull, echoing thud, plunging the interior into cool, shadowed darkness, Victoria slid into the seat beside them, pulling a silver-plated lighter from her designer handbag and flicking the wheel to produce a small, dancing flame that illuminated the terrifying smile on her face.
