Chapter 2 - The Blue Suit and the Past

Arthur stopped mid-sentence, his lungs heaving as the shadow of the elegant woman fell over his wooden cart. Julian’s mouth remained open, the harsh retort dying in his throat as he stared at the newcomer. The woman was striking, her hair pulled into a severe chignon, her sapphire-blue suit radiating a quiet, terrifying authority that commanded immediate silence in the bustling park. She ignored Julian entirely, focusing her sharp, amber eyes solely on the elderly vendor.

"Arthur Vance?" the woman asked, her voice low, smooth, and devoid of any warmth.

Arthur staggered backward, his grip tightening on the edge of his wooden cart until his knuckles turned white. All the color drained from his weathered face, leaving him a ghastly, pale grey. He looked at the white envelope clutched in her manicured hand, and then up into her eyes. Recognition flashed across his features, followed instantly by a wave of pure, unadulterated terror. He opened his mouth to speak, but only a dry rasp escaped his throat.

"It's been a long time, Arthur," the woman continued, stepping closer until she was standing right beside the grease-spotted apron he wore. She lifted the thick white envelope and extended it toward him with deliberate slowness. "Fifteen years, to be exact. Since you walked out of that courtroom and left everyone else to pick up the pieces of the fire you started."

Julian stepped closer, his curiosity momentarily overriding his anger. "Who is she, Arthur? What is that?"

Arthur didn't answer. He was shaking violently, his knees buckling slightly. He looked at the envelope as if it were a venomous snake coil-ready to strike. The crowd around them blurred into a meaningless wash of noise and motion, leaving only the sound of the woman's breathing and the ticking of a distant clock.

"Take it," the woman commanded warmly, though her eyes remained as cold as arctic ice. "The repayment I promised you."

With trembling, arthritic fingers, Arthur reached out and grasped the thick envelope. The paper felt heavy, unnaturally dense. He pulled the flap open with a trembling thumb, sliding the contents out just enough to catch the dull green gleam of hundred-dollar bills packed tightly together. His breath hitched in his throat. It wasn't just a loan repayment; it was a small fortune.

"You... you shouldn't have brought this here," Arthur choked out, casting a panicked glance around the crowded park. "People are watching. She's watching."

The elegant woman smirked, a chilling, humorless curve of her lips that didn't reach her eyes. She leaned in close to Arthur’s ear, whispering something so softly that even Julian, standing mere feet away, couldn't catch the words. Whatever she said turned Arthur's terror into absolute, petrified shock. His jaw dropped slack, his eyes bulging as the envelope slipped from his nerveless fingers, scattering a flurry of crisp hundred-dollar bills across the dirty city sidewalk.
