Chapter 1 - The First Notice

The fluorescent lights of aisle twelve hummed with a sterile, migraine-inducing frequency. Clara adjusted the strap of her white knit sweater, her knuckles pale as she gripped her toddler son Leo’s small, trusting hand. He wore his favorite cream-colored knit sweater and beige overalls, entirely oblivious to the heavy, suffocating atmosphere that had suddenly settled over the supermarket. A shopping cart stood abandoned nearby, its front wheel jammed at an awkward angle.

Then, heavy footsteps echoed against the linoleum. A tall Caucasian police officer with dark hair and a neat short beard stepped directly into their path. A silver badge gleamed sharply on his chest, catching the harsh overhead glare. Clara’s heart slammed violently against her ribs. She tried to pull Leo behind her, but the officer raised a gloved hand, his expression carved from stone.

“Ma'am, could you stop for a moment?” the officer asked, his voice flat, devoid of human warmth or professional courtesy.

Clara swallowed hard, her throat dry as dust. “What is this about? We are just trying to buy groceries. My son is hungry.”

The officer did not blink. He stepped closer, invading her personal space with calculated intimidation.

“Ma'am, there's one little problem,” the officer said, gesturing with sharp, mechanical hand movements toward the empty air between them. “Your little one needs more followers and comments.”

Clara gasped, stepping back until her spine hit a stack of canned tomatoes. “Are you out of your mind? He is two years old! He doesn't even know what a phone is!”

“The metrics are non-negotiable,” the officer replied coldly, tapping a sleek, glowing device attached to his wrist. “The Central Engagement Board dictates compliance. Under subsection nine, public visibility requires continuous digital validation. If the engagement targets are not met within the hour, standard protocol applies.”

Clara dropped to her knees, the cold floor biting through her jeans. Tears welled hot and fast in her eyes as she grabbed Leo’s shoulders, pulling him tight against her chest. “Please, leave us alone! This is insane!”

Leo looked directly forward, his lower lip trembling violently. Tears streamed down his chubby cheeks as he reached his small hands out toward the invisible lens hovering above them.

“Please follow! Please comment! Let my mommy go!” Leo sobbed, his voice cracking with pure terror.

“Let my mommy go!” the toddler screamed, his mouth wide open in utter despair as the officer’s wrist device flashed a blinding, merciless red warning light.
