Chapter 5 - The Master Switch Blackout

The sudden and complete darkness in the subterranean server room was absolute. The whirring roar of the cooling fans died instantly, replaced by a ringing silence so profound it felt like a physical pressure against Leo’s eardrums. In the pitch black, Leo could hear the soft, steady breathing of his one-year-old sister just a few feet away.
“Leo?” Lily whispered, the high-pitched tone laced with sudden panic. “Where did the lights go?”
“Don’t move, Lily. Stay right where you are,” Leo commanded, reaching out blindly into the dark space. His hand brushed against the cool metal casing of a server rack, guiding his steps forward.
Before he could reach her, a blinding beam of white light cut through the darkness. It wasn’t the emergency backup lighting; it was a high-intensity professional studio spotlight mounted on the ceiling, pivoting automatically on a motorized track to lock directly onto Lily’s face.
Lily squinted against the harsh glare, raising a tiny hand to shield her eyes.
Right beside her, a synthetic voice crackled out from the overhead public address system—a cold, metallic voice that sounded uncannily like their absent father, yet distorted by digital filters.
“Attention, Unit Seven and Unit One. Power interruption detected. Resetting engagement parameters.”
Leo lunged forward into the spotlight beam, grabbing Lily by the shoulders and pulling her tightly against his grey shorts and blue t-shirt.
“Leave her alone!” Leo shouted up at the ceiling camera, his voice shaking with a potent mixture of terror and long-suppressed rage. “We quit! Do you hear me? We’re done streaming!”
The P.A. system emitted a low, electronic chuckle that echoed hollowly off the concrete walls.
“Quit? There is no quitting, Leo. The contract was signed in perpetuity by your legal guardians against your future earnings. The audience demands closure.”
On the wall behind the server racks, a massive digital countdown timer flickered to life in bright red numbers: 03:59:59, ticking backward second by second.
Lily clutched the fabric of Leo’s blue t-shirt, burying her face against his chest.
“I want to go upstairs, Other,” Lily whimpered softly.
“We’ll go,” Leo muttered, his jaw set in stubborn defiance. He grabbed Lily’s small hand and began guiding her back toward the narrow wooden stairs.

As they reached the base of the staircase, the heavy steel door at the top swung open with a loud click, and a tall silhouette stepped into the frame, blocking their only exit.
