Chapter 2 - The Empty Hallway

The sudden slam of the front door echoed through the quiet house, cutting sharply through the soft whimpers of the toddler standing by the dining table. Leo did not flinch. His eyes remained glued to the glowing screen of his smartphone, watching the live chat scroll by at a blinding speed. Comments were flooding in from thousands of unseen strangers, reacting to Lily’s tears with a twisted mix of amusement and heartless indifference.
Lily wiped her damp cheek with the sleeve of her pastel rainbow dress, her sobs quieting down into ragged breathing as she turned toward the dark hallway.
“Mama?” Lily whispered into the empty space.
No one answered. The house felt entirely hollow, save for the faint hum of the refrigerator in the corner of the kitchen and the steady click of the server farm Leo kept hidden in the basement. Their parents had not been physically present in the house for over three weeks, though their bank accounts were perpetually replenished by the corporate sponsors funding Leo’s viral channel.
Leo lowered his phone slightly, casting a sidelong glance at the hallway.
“They aren't coming back yet, Lily. They’re at the studio in downtown Los Angeles, signing the renewal contracts,” Leo said, his voice devoid of any familial comfort.
Lily took a hesitant step away from the dining table, her tiny bare feet padding softly against the hardwood floor. She approached the threshold of the kitchen, peering into the dim shadows of the corridor where the family portraits hung on the wall. Every single frame displayed a digitally altered version of their family, engineered to maximize engagement metrics rather than capture genuine memories.
“I want the cake,” Lily whimpered, her tiny hands balling into fists at her sides.
“You can’t have the cake until your subscriber count hits fifty thousand,” Leo replied, tapping his finger against the glass of his phone. “The contract explicitly states that unverified minors cannot consume sponsored confectionery on camera.”
Lily didn't understand the corporate jargon, but she understood the absolute finality in her brother's tone. She turned her back to the kitchen and began to walk down the dark hallway alone, her small shoulders shaking with quiet sadness.
Leo watched her go, a flicker of something unreadable crossing his youthful features. He raised another bite of chocolate cake to his mouth, chewing slowly as the screen in his hand refreshed with a breaking notification.

An anonymous account had just transferred fifty thousand dollars directly into their holding trust, attached to a chilling message that made Leo freeze mid-bite.
