Chapter 7: Shadows in the City

Miles away from the sprawling security of the Vance estate, Julian Miller sat alone in the leather-paneled study of his downtown penthouse apartment. The heavy velvet curtains were drawn shut, blocking out the gray afternoon light and plunging the room into artificial twilight. Empty crystal tumblers and overflowing ashtrays littered the mahogany coffee table, bearing witness to a night and morning spent in frantic, isolated panic.
His cell phone vibrated incessantly on the arm of the sofa—text messages from panicked investors, legal warnings from corporate counsel, and missed calls from his father. He ignored them all, staring blankly at the glowing screen of his laptop where a flight booking page to Zurich remained open.
The front door chimed softly, followed by the electronic click of the smart lock disengaging. Richard Miller walked into the study, slamming his briefcase down onto the desk with enough force to rattle the stationery. He looked older than his sixty years, the fight entirely drained from his posture.
“I just came from the Vance estate,” Richard said, his voice hollow. “Arthur won’t budge. The embezzlement charges are moving forward, and the board has already convened an emergency session to strip you of your vice presidency.”
Julian looked up slowly, his dark hair disheveled, his eyes bloodshot from lack of sleep. He gave a bitter, defensive laugh. “So fight them! Sue them for defamation! We have the best corporate lawyers in the country on retainer.”
“There is no fighting this, Julian!” Richard snapped, his temper finally flaring as he stepped toward his son. “The bank records are clean. You signed every fraudulent transfer with your own digital key. Arthur didn’t just catch you; he built an airtight case before he even confronted you at the party.”
Julian stood up abruptly, knocking a glass off the edge of the table where it shattered against the hardwood floor. “He humiliated me! In front of everyone! He threw his watch down like I was a stray dog!”
“Because you acted like one!” Richard shouted back, his voice cracking with exhaustion and bitter regret. For the first time in his life, the older man looked at his son not with pride or ambition, but with profound disappointment. “I spent my entire life building this family name, giving you every advantage, protecting you from every consequence, and you threw it all away because you couldn’t control your temper or your greed.”
Julian stepped back, the reality of his situation finally beginning to penetrate his defensive armor. The money was gone, his social standing was obliterated, and the federal indictment meant that staying in the country was no longer an option.
“I need the emergency contingency funds from the offshore account,” Julian muttered, his voice trembling slightly.

“The offshore accounts have already been frozen by a federal injunction requested by Arthur’s legal team this morning,” Richard replied quietly, turning toward the door. “You’re on your own, Julian. I can’t protect you anymore.”
