Chapter 3: Inside the Lion’s Den

Back inside the grand ballroom, the atmosphere had shifted from festive celebration to palpable tension. The string quartet continued to play near the floor-to-ceiling windows, but the guests had discreetly retreated to the periphery of the room, pretending to admire the floral arrangements while keeping their eyes fixed on Arthur Vance and Julian.

Arthur had not moved an inch from his spot at the table. His tall frame towered over Julian, who had finally set his half-empty champagne flute down onto a passing waiter’s silver tray. Julian’s jaw was tight now, his earlier arrogance replaced by a defensive posture. He adjusted the lapels of his dark blue suit jacket, attempting to regain the upper hand through sheer bravado.

“Arthur, you’re making a scene over nothing,” Julian said, his voice dropping into a low, smooth register meant to sound reasonable. “Couples argue. It got out of hand, sure, but family business shouldn’t be aired out like a dirty handkerchief in front of all these people.”

Arthur’s gaze remained ice-cold. He reached out and picked up the heavy gold wristwatch from the white tablecloth, slipping it back onto his left wrist with deliberate, unhurried movements. The metallic click of the clasp sounded unnaturally loud in the quiet space between them.

“You misunderstand the situation, Julian,” Arthur replied evenly, his voice carrying a quiet authority that commanded absolute silence. “You did not just have an argument with a partner. You struck my daughter in the face on her birthday, under my roof, while accepting the hospitality of the Vance family.”

Julian scoffed, shaking his head with a dismissive smirk. “She provoked me. She always has to have the last word. Besides, our fathers signed the preliminary merger papers last Tuesday. You really think you’re going to blow up a multi-million-dollar partnership over a swollen cheek?”

Arthur took a single step closer, invading Julian’s personal space with chilling precision. “The merger was contingent upon mutual respect and character verification, both of which you have fundamentally failed to demonstrate. Do you honestly believe I built this company by tying my fortunes to a man who lacks the basic self-control to keep his hands to himself?”

Julian’s eyes flickered with genuine concern for the first time. The smooth facade cracked, revealing the insecure, entitled young man hiding beneath the tailored suit. “My father won’t let you walk away from this. We own half the distribution network in the tristate area.”

Arthur smiled faintly, a humorless expression that didn’t reach his eyes. “Then I suggest you call your father and tell him to find a new buyer. Because as of tonight, you are completely finished in this city.”
