Chapter 2: Shadows Across the Glass

The immediate panic subsided into a tense, suffocating quiet as Leo finally drifted into an exhausted sleep against Clara’s shoulder. The soft ticking of the grandfather clock in the hallway sounded unnaturally loud, marking the passage of minutes that felt like hours. Clara remained standing near the fireplace, the dying embers radiating a faint, dry heat that did little to dispel the chill settling deep within her bones. Julian stood by the front window, his fingers parting the heavy velvet drapes just enough to peer out into the moonlit driveway.

"There's nothing out there," Julian said quietly, letting the curtain fall back into place with a muted rustle. He turned to face his wife, his brow furrowed with a mixture of fatigue and lingering anxiety. "The car is locked, the perimeter lights are on. It was just a bad dream, Clara. Or maybe his ears hurt from the altitude drop earlier."

Clara shook her head slowly, careful not to disturb the sleeping infant. "He wasn't dreaming, Julian. He woke up screaming. His eyes were wide open, staring right at the corner of the ceiling near the bookshelf."

Julian sighed, walking over to wrap an arm around Clara’s waist, pulling both her and the baby into a careful, protective embrace. The black fabric of his tuxedo felt cold against her cheek. They were both exhausted; the pressures of a new baby, combined with the unspoken professional strains Julian had been hiding for months, were fraying their nerves. Yet, neither of them wanted to voice the irrational fear whispering in the back of their minds.

They returned to the dinner table, though the prospect of eating had entirely vanished. Julian blew out the tall white taper candles, plunging the dining area into a dimmer, more somber light. As they carried Leo upstairs to the nursery, every floorboard seemed to creak with accusatory volume. They settled the baby into his crib, watching him for several minutes until his breathing regulated into deep, rhythmic sighs.

Back in the master bedroom, sitting on the edge of the mattress while shedding his stiff bow tie, Julian looked up at Clara. "We need to talk about next week. My firm... they want me to travel to Chicago right after New Year's."

Clara froze, her hands unzipping the velvet dress. The intimacy of the holiday evening had evaporated completely, replaced by the harsh reality of their separate, complicated worlds.
