Chapter 13

As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the evening sky in bruised shades of violet and amber, Julian walked out onto the second-story terrace of their estate, holding a warm cup of black coffee. The manicured lawns and dark treelines stretched out into the quiet night, beautiful and entirely secure. He leaned his forearms against the wrought-iron railing, letting the cool evening breeze brush against his face. The intense expression that usually defined his features had softened into a look of deep, meditative calm.

Footsteps echoed softly on the stone tiles behind him, and a moment later, Sloane stepped out onto the terrace. She had draped his black suit jacket—the very same jacket he had used to shield her at the grand ballroom months ago—over her shoulders, letting the familiar fabric wrap around her like a second skin. She walked up beside him, resting her hands on the railing and gazing out at the starlit horizon.

"Do you ever think back to that night at the gala?" Sloane asked quietly, her voice blending seamlessly with the gentle rustle of the leaves in the garden below. "When Victoria tried to humiliate me in front of the entire city?"

Julian turned his head slightly, looking at her profile illuminated by the soft amber glow of the terrace lights. "I think about it sometimes," he admitted honestly. "Not with anger, but with clarity. That night was a turning point. It forced us to confront the superficiality of the world we moved in and reminded us what actually matters."

"I used to be so afraid of conflict," Sloane continued, her fingers absently tracing the hem of the black jacket. "I thought that if I just smiled, stayed quiet, and ignored the cruelty, it would eventually go away. But it doesn't work that way. People like Victoria only respect boundaries when you force them to look at the line."

"And you held that line with absolute grace," Julian said, wrapping his arm around her shoulders and pulling her closer to his side. "You didn't scream, you didn't retaliate with their petty weapons, and you didn't let them compromise your dignity. You simply stood your ground, and let me handle the legal architecture of their downfall."

"A formidable partnership," Sloane smiled, leaning her head against his shoulder.

"The best kind," Julian agreed softly.

They stood together on the terrace for a long time, watching the stars emerge in the clear night sky. The journey from the brightly lit, suffocating ballroom to this quiet, starlit sanctuary had been long and demanding, requiring patience, discipline, and unyielding strength. Yet, standing there together, wrapped in the quiet comfort of their shared life, they knew every step of the battle had been entirely worth it.
