Chapter 1

The crystal chandeliers of the Grand Meridian Ballroom cast a cold, fractured light across the polished marble floor, but Julian Vance felt only the burning heat of absolute fury. His dark tuxedo felt heavy, constricting his chest as he walked with measured, deliberate strides away from the murmuring crowd. He had just draped his black suit jacket over his wife Sloane’s trembling shoulders, shielding her from the cruel, prying eyes of the city's elite. Sloane stood huddled in her sleek beige gown, her updo slightly undone, whispering pleas for peace that Julian’s racing mind barely registered. He could still see the red mark of public humiliation burning on her cheeks, a malicious gift orchestrated by someone who pretended to be a friend.
Julian’s intense brown eyes flicked across the room until they locked onto Victoria Sterling. Victoria stood amidst a cluster of fluttering gossips, her emerald green beaded gown catching the light like the scales of a serpent. Her blonde hair was styled to perfection, framing a smile that was entirely devoid of warmth. She had thought her cruel whispers about Sloane’s family heritage would go unnoticed, a quiet demolition of a good woman’s reputation executed behind a designer glass of champagne. She had miscalculated. She had forgotten that Julian Vance did not view marriage as a social arrangement, but as a sacred vow protected by unyielding loyalty.
Leaving Sloane in the care of a trusted family retainer, Julian crossed the remaining distance between them with the quiet menace of a predator closing in on its prey. The surrounding chatter began to fade as the high-society guests recognized the shift in the room's atmospheric pressure. Heads turned away, glasses lowered, and a suffocating silence settled over the dance floor. Julian stopped two paces from Victoria, his posture rigid, his hands resting naturally at his sides. He did not yell, nor did he make a dramatic scene; his voice was low, carrying a dangerous, razor-sharp edge that cut straight through the ambient noise of the orchestra.
"You have humiliated my wife in front of this city, Victoria," Julian said, his voice trembling with a tightly leashed rage. "You thought you could weaponize your social standing to destroy someone whose kindness you could never hope to match."
May you like
Victoria blinked, her composure faltering for a split second before she plastered on a brittle, defensive grin. She raised her glass slightly, attempting to brush off the confrontation as a misunderstanding. "Julian, darling, you are making a scene over nothing. It was merely a joke among friends."
"Cruelty disguised as humor is still cruelty," Julian replied, his gaze unblinking. "And your little game ends tonight." Without waiting for her reply, Julian turned sharply on his heel, returning to Sloane's side. He firmly took her by the arm, guiding her past the frozen onlookers and out toward the cool night air of the private exit, leaving Victoria standing utterly alone in her shimmering green dress.
