Chapter 9 - The Wet Labyrinth

The storm water rushed through the cavernous concrete tunnels below, a roaring torrent of murky brown water that rose nearly to Lily's knees. Marcus kept a tight grip on her hand, leading her through the labyrinth of subterranean channels built a century ago beneath the city's commercial district.

The air was thick with damp earth, rust, and ozone. Every few minutes, the muffled boom of thunder vibrated through miles of concrete above their heads.

"Where are we going?" Lily asked, shivering uncontrollably as the icy current pulled at her legs.

"To an old warehouse near the industrial docks," Marcus replied, his eyes constantly scanning the pipes and junctions ahead. "I kept a safe house there ten years ago, before you were born. A car, clean documents, and off-grid communications."

"Is Mommy's old car there?" she asked softly.

Marcus paused for a fraction of a second, a flicker of profound grief crossing his guarded expression before hardening back into resolve. "Yes. Her sedan is still in the bay."

Lily's mother had passed away four years earlier from a sudden, aggressive illness—or at least, that was the story Marcus had always told her. But after hearing Clara speak of syndicates and partners, cold doubt began to bloom in Lily’s young mind. Did Clara lie about everything? Did Uncle Arthur have something to do with her mother, too?

Before she could ask, the beam of their flashlight caught something floating in the water ahead: a black tactical helmet, bobbing against a drainage sluice gate.

Marcus instantly killed his light, pulling Lily behind a massive concrete support pillar. He drew his weapon, his breath catching in his throat.

Footsteps sloshed through the water ahead of them—not running, but advancing in a slow, coordinated sweep. Whispered radio chatter drifted across the damp walls: "Echo Team, we have movement in Sector 4. The package is moving toward the seawall outlet. Intercept and contain."

They were already ahead of them. The syndicate knew the layout of the city better than Marcus anticipated.
