Chapter 10 - The Ambush at the Sluice

Marcus leaned down, his lips brushing against Lily's ear. "Stay behind this pillar. No matter what you hear, no matter what you see, do not leave this dry concrete ridge. If I tell you to run, you follow that green maintenance pipe straight out to the harbor."
Lily gripped his sleeve, her eyes begging him not to leave her, but Marcus gently peeled her fingers away. He stepped silently into the waist-deep water, submerging himself entirely beneath the dark surface, leaving not even a ripple.
Lily held her breath, curling into the shadow of the conduit.
Seconds later, two figures in wet-weather combat gear rounded the corner, their weapon-mounted tactical lights sweeping the water. "Clear left. Clear right. Wait—there are fresh boot prints on the concrete ledge."
The lead operative pointed his barrel straight toward Lily’s hiding spot behind the pillar. He took two steps forward, his finger resting lightly on the trigger. Lily squeezed her eyes shut, waiting for the blast.
Suddenly, the black water behind him erupted.
Marcus breached the surface like a leviathan, grabbing the rear guard by his tactical vest and dragging him beneath the water before the man could draw a breath. The lead operative spun around in panic, firing three blind bursts into the frothing current.
Marcus surged upward beneath the muzzle, deflecting the rifle with his forearm and driving an open palm strike into the operative’s throat. The man choked, staggering backward into the churning sluice gate. Marcus followed through, securing the weapon and disabling both men with ruthless, surgical efficiency.
He climbed back onto the ledge, gasping for air, water streaming from his face and hair. He didn't look like her polished, corporate father anymore; he looked like a soldier returned from hell.

"Go," Marcus coughed, hauling Lily to her feet. "The harbor outlet is fifty yards ahead."
They broke into a run, bursting through the rusted iron exit flaps just as the first glimmer of grey dawn began to fight the storm clouds.
