Chapter 13 - The Unraveling

Sarah turned her back, using her own body as a human shield to protect Lily.
The syringe plunged deep into Sarah’s shoulder muscle. A searing fire shot down her arm as Evelyn emptied the concentrated sedative into Sarah's bloodstream.
Sarah gasped in agony, but the primal fury of motherhood overpowered the burning chemical. She spun around, driving her heel into Evelyn's chest with all her remaining strength.
The older woman flew backward, crashing into the antique vanity table. Perfume bottles shattered, spraying expensive scents and broken glass across the floor.
"Get away from them!" Ethan roared.
The shock that had paralyzed him shattered. Ethan tackled his mother to the floor, pinning her wrists against the carpet as she screeched like a wounded animal, scratching at his face with manicured nails.
"Let go of me, you pathetic idiot!" Evelyn screamed, thrashing wildly. "Everything I built was for you! I bought you that house! I gave you your career! You owe me everything!"
Sarah stumbled backward against the balcony railing, her vision beginning to blur as the powerful drug took hold of her central nervous system. Her knees buckled, but she tightened her grip on Lily, sliding down the wall until she sat on the floor, holding her daughter against her heart.
Outside, the night erupted in screaming sirens.
Dozens of red and blue lights flashed through the trees, illuminating the bedroom ceiling in swirling patterns of emergency colors. Heavy tires tore across the manicured lawn below, followed by the deafening sound of breaching rams smashing through the front doors of the estate.
"State Police! Nobody move!" voices bellowed through the lower halls.
Detective Miller led the charge up the grand staircase, guns drawn, flanked by federal agents from the Child Protection Task Force. They burst into the bedroom, securing the scene in seconds.
Two officers dragged Evelyn off the floor, pinning her against the wall and snapping steel cuffs onto her wrists. Her silver hair was wild, her silk robe torn, her face a mask of ruined madness as she cursed at everyone in the room.
"Sarah!" Ethan fell to his knees beside his wife, tears streaming down his face as he reached for her. "Sarah, forgive me... Oh God, forgive me..."
Sarah looked at him through heavy, drooping eyelids. The sedative was dragging her under a dark, suffocating wave, but she refused to close her eyes until she was certain.
"Take... Lily..." Sarah slurred, pushing the baby into a paramedic's waiting arms. "Save... my baby..."
