Chapter 12 - Blood and Lies

"Ethan, look at your wife," Evelyn said smoothly, pointing a manicured finger at Sarah's disheveled, mud-soaked form. "Breaking in through the balcony like a wild animal. She’s completely unhinged."

"Sarah?" Ethan choked out, taking a hesitant step forward. "How did you find us? Arthur told me you fled the state!"

"Arthur tried to kill me, Ethan!" Sarah held Lily tightly against her chest, feeling the faint, fluttering heartbeat of her daughter. "Smell Lily's breath! Look at her pupils! Your mother drugged her again! She's poisoning our baby!"

"That's a lie!" Evelyn's voice turned shrill, shedding its polished calm. "The doctor gave me prescription drops to soothe the child's neurological pain! Sarah is delusional, Ethan. She came here to kidnap her and finish what she started!"

"Ethan, please," Sarah begged, tears cutting paths through the grime on her face. "Check your phone. I forwarded the nanny-cam footage to your private email before they burned Clara's house down."

Ethan stopped dead in his tracks. "What nanny cam?"

"Don't listen to her, Ethan!" Evelyn snapped, stepping between them. "She is manipulating you! Call security right now!"

Ethan hesitated, his hand reaching into his pocket and pulling out his phone. His screen was filled with unread notifications.

"Ethan, look at the video," Sarah whispered, stepping back toward the French doors to shield Lily with her own body. "Look at what she did to our daughter while you were sleeping."

Evelyn lunged toward Ethan, trying to snatch the phone from his grip. "Give that to me! How dare you doubt your own mother!"

That single desperate action broke the spell. Ethan yanked his hand away, his eyes locking onto his mother's suddenly panicked expression. He tapped the notification.

The silence in the room was shattered by the faint audio of Evelyn's voice playing through the phone's small speakers:

*“Hush now, you little parasite... Your mother won't be in our way much longer.”*

Ethan watched the grainy green video of his mother smothering his infant child, his face draining of all color until he looked like a corpse. His jaw trembled, the phone slipping between his fingers and hitting the carpet with a dull thud.

"Mom...?" Ethan’s voice was a child's whimper. "What did you do?"

Evelyn’s face twisted into an expression of raw, unadulterated venom. "I did what was necessary! She was taking you away from me! She was ruining this family! You were always weak, Ethan, just like your father!"

Before anyone could react, Evelyn lunged—not at Ethan, but straight at Sarah, the silver syringe aimed directly at Lily's neck.
