Chapter 13 - The Hallway Shotgun

Agent Vance froze mid-step, his tactical submachine gun slowly pivoting toward the dark hallway entrance behind him. The flashing red and blue lights from the street cast eerie, pulsing shadows across the walls, highlighting the tension in the room.

"Who’s there?" Vance barked, his voice losing its cool authority as he scanned the shadows. "Identify yourself or be fired upon!"

From the darkness of the hallway, a heavy, shuffling figure stepped slowly into the amber glow of the Christmas tree lights. It was the elderly father, holding an old-fashioned double-barreled 12-gauge hunting shotgun with surprising firmness, the dual barrels pointed unsteadily at the center of Vance’s tactical vest.

"Put the weapon down, Agent Vance," the old man commanded, his voice trembling slightly with age and exertion, but carrying an unmistakable ring of steel. "You’ve terrorized this family enough tonight."

Vance chuckled darkly, lowering his submachine gun just a fraction as he sized up the elderly man. "An old hunting shotgun loaded with birdshot? Do you honestly think that’s going to stop me, old man? At this range, I’ll put three rounds into your chest before you even pull the trigger."

"He might not hit you in the chest," Sarah interjected sharply, stepping smoothly to the side and raising her revolver directly toward Vance’s head. "But at this range, I won't miss. Drop the gun, Uncle."

Vance’s eyes darted between the elderly father’s shotgun and Sarah’s steady revolver. The tactical advantage he had held moments before evaporated into thin air. He slowly lowered his weapon, letting the heavy submachine gun hang by its sling against his flak jacket.

"You're all making a massive mistake," Vance warned, his voice low and dangerous. "If you think killing me stops the federal seizure, you're delusional. The entire perimeter of this property is locked down by my tactical unit. Nobody leaves this house alive tonight."

David seized the opening. While Vance’s attention was divided between the weapons aimed at him, David lunged forward, grabbing the heavy brass fireplace poker from the rug and swinging it in a wide, sweeping arc toward Vance’s knees.

The heavy brass connected with a sickening crunch. Vance roared in pain, his legs buckling beneath him as he crashed hard to the hardwood floor, dropping his radio transceiver across the room.

Elena didn't hesitate. She sprinted across the ruined living room, snatched up the radio from the floor, and pressed the broadcast button with all her might.

"All units, this is Commander Vance's secure channel!" Elena screamed into the microphone, her voice echoing through the external tactical speakers parked outside on the lawn. "Stand down! The commander is compromised! I repeat, the operation is a federal setup! Stand down immediately!"

Outside, the heavy roar of tactical vehicle engines idling in the snow suddenly cut out. A tense silence fell over the front yard, followed by the sound of confused shouting over police band radios.

Vance groaned on the floor, clutching his shattered knee as he glared up at Elena with absolute hatred. "You just signed your own death warrants," he spat, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth. "The local precinct is completely under our jurisdiction. No help is coming."

As if in direct contradiction to his words, the sharp, rhythmic wail of state police sirens—distinctly different from the federal tactical cruisers—echoed loudly down the suburban street, rapidly approaching the house.
