Chapter 1 - The Silence After the Scream

The warm glow of the Christmas tree lights danced across the living room walls, casting a deceptive warmth over a scene frozen in absolute horror. Clara sat rigidly on the cream-colored couch, her long brown hair tumbling over her shoulders as she clutched the tiny, motionless form of the infant against her chest. The baby’s green reindeer-patterned onesie felt mockingly festive against the heavy, suffocating dread filling the room. Just seconds ago, Clara had discovered the unthinkable. Now, her raw, soundless grief echoed louder than any cry.

Across the room, David stood frozen by the fireplace, his blue button-down shirt wrinkled, his dark hair disheveled as his face drained of all color. Beside him, Clara’s elderly parents sat gripping the edge of the cushions, their weathered faces twisted in sudden, agonizing confusion.

Elena, walking forward in her burgundy wrap blouse, stopped mid-step. Her blonde hair, tied neatly back, seemed to wilt as she stared at Clara.

"What is wrong with her?" Elena demanded, her voice cutting through the heavy air with sharp, nervous panic. "Clara, stop holding him like that! What did you just do?"

Clara shook her head violently, tears streaming down her pale face. "He’s cold, Elena. He’s ice cold. He wasn’t breathing when I picked him up."

David stepped forward, his voice trembling with disbelief and immediate defense. "That’s impossible. I checked on him less than ten minutes ago before bringing him down from the nursery. He was sleeping fine."

"Sleeping?" Clara shrieked, the raw anguish finally breaking her silence. "You call this sleeping? Look at him, David! Look at his lips!"

Elena rushed forward, grabbing Clara’s arm to pull her back. "Let me see. Give me the baby, Clara. You’re hysterical. You’re suffocating him."

"Get away from me!" Clara screamed, violently shoving Elena backward. "You gave him to me! You were the last one in the nursery before we came down for photos!"

Elena stumbled against the coffee table, her eyes widening in sudden, defensive fury. "Are you out of your mind? I handed him to you safely! Don't you dare try to pin this nightmare on me!"

The elderly father stood up slowly, raising a trembling hand. "Stop it. Both of you, stop this right now. We need to call an ambulance immediately."

David reached into his pocket for his phone, his fingers fumbling frantically against the screen. He tapped the glass, pressed the receiver icon, and brought the device to his ear. His expression shifted from shock to stark terror as he stared at the glowing screen.

"There’s no signal," David whispered, his voice cracking. "None of our phones are working."
