Chapter 11: The Fractured Alliance

The holding cell on the women's side of the federal facility smelled of damp concrete and industrial disinfectant. Victoria Sterling sat on the edge of her cot, wrapped in a coarse orange jumpsuit that clashed violently with her dyed blonde hair and manicured nails. Her makeup was entirely gone, revealing the pale, exhausted skin beneath. The high heels were gone, replaced by standard-issue canvas slip-ons.

The heavy steel door swung open, and a correctional officer called out her name. "Sterling. Visitor in booth three."

Victoria stood up quickly, a desperate spark of hope igniting in her chest. She smoothed down the front of her jumpsuit, assuming her legal team had finally broken through the blockade and secured an appeal or a reduced bail hearing. She marched down the corridor with a semblance of her old posture, though her steps lacked their former designer confidence.

When she entered the visitation booth, however, she didn't see her attorney. Sitting behind the Plexiglas partition was Marcus, holding a thin manila folder.

Victoria sank onto the metal stool, snatched up the plastic telephone receiver, and pressed it to her ear. "Where is my legal counsel? Why are you here? If Julian sent you to—"

"Julian didn't send me, Ms. Sterling," Marcus interrupted smoothly, his voice entirely devoid of emotion. He placed the manila folder flat against the glass on his side, opening it to reveal a series of financial statements and legal affidavits.

Victoria squinted at the documents through the glass. "What is this?"

"These are the certified transcripts of your communications with the Vanguard executives," Marcus said calmly. "Along with the paper trail proving that you systematically funneled corporate shell-company funds into your private boutique accounts while orchestrating the hostile takeover of Vance Industrial Heritage."

"That’s privileged!" Victoria hissed, pressing her face closer to the glass, her voice rising in panic. "Those were private communications between business partners!"

"They were criminal conspiracies," Marcus corrected without missing a beat. "And your former legal team has already submitted a motion to sever your cases, placing the primary liability for the shell-company transfers entirely on your shoulders."

The color drained completely from Victoria’s face. She stared at the quiet, composed man across the glass, realizing that every safety net she had ever relied upon—her charm, her social standing, her manipulation of Julian—had been systematically dismantled.

"She wants to destroy me," Victoria whispered, her voice trembling with genuine terror. "Helena wants me completely ruined."

"Mrs. Vance doesn't even know you're here, Ms. Sterling," Marcus replied quietly, closing the folder with a soft rustle of paper. "You were never an opponent worthy of her direct attention. You were simply an accessory to a very predictable crime committed by a very foolish man. Mrs. Vance is currently in Ohio, reopening a manufacturing plant that employs twelve hundred families. She doesn't have time to destroy you. You did that all by yourself."

Marcus set the receiver back onto its cradle, stood up, and walked out of the visitation room without looking back, leaving Victoria alone in the suffocating silence of her own consequences.
