Chapter 7: The Closing Net

The sleek black sedan of the Federal Financial Crimes Bureau idled quietly in the private subterranean garage of the penthouse tower. Marcus watched from the floor-to-ceiling living room window as two federal agents in tailored charcoal suits stepped out of the elevator into the penthouse foyer, accompanied by building security. The inevitability of the moment hung heavily in the air, thick and suffocating.
Elena stood by the marble kitchen island, her breathing shallow, her manicured fingers gripping the edge of the counter so tightly her skin went pale. Her earlier defiance had evaporated, replaced by a cold, cornered desperation. She looked toward the private service elevator at the end of the hall, calculating her odds of slipping away before the agents crossed the threshold, but she knew the exit was already blocked.
Marcus remained seated in his leather armchair, staring blankly at the spot on the dining room floor where the glass table had shattered just two nights prior. The realization of how easily he had been duped gnawed at his core. He had allowed his ego, his need for absolute affirmation, to blind him to the obvious corruption unfolding right under his roof.
The double doors opened. Agent Miller, a sharp-eyed woman with silver hair and an authoritative bearing, stepped into the room, flanked by her partner. She did not look at Marcus; her gaze locked instantly onto Elena.
“Elena Vance?” Agent Miller asked, her voice calm and absolute. “I am Special Agent Miller with the Financial Crimes Bureau. You are being detained for questioning regarding wire fraud, identity falsification, and the systematic embezzlement of charitable assets totaling over two million dollars.”
Elena stood tall, pulling her cashmere wrap tighter around her shoulders, attempting to salvage a shred of dignity. “I demand to speak with my legal counsel before I answer any questions. This is an egregious misunderstanding orchestrated by a disgruntled spouse.”
“Your legal counsel has already been notified, and your corporate accounts have been frozen pursuant to a federal magistrate’s warrant,” Agent Miller replied smoothly. She gestured to her partner, who stepped forward with standard-issue restraints. “Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”

As the cold metal clicked around Elena’s wrists, she cast one final, venomous glance toward Marcus. There were no tears, no dramatic outbursts—just a chilling promise of retaliation frozen in her dark eyes before she was led away down the private corridor.
The heavy oak doors clicked shut behind the agents, leaving Marcus alone in the massive, silent penthouse. The luxury around him suddenly felt hollow, a monument to his own arrogance. He picked up his phone, his thumb hovering over Clara’s contact card, knowing that apologizing would not be enough to mend what he had so carelessly broken.
