Chapter 5: The Legal Wall

The heavy mahogany conference table in Marcus’s downtown office smelled of polished wood and expensive leather. Marcus sat at the center, flanked by his corporate attorney, David Vance, a man whose graying temples and sharp silver-rimmed glasses projected an aura of unyielding authority. Across the table sat Clara, accompanied by an independent family law specialist she had retained quietly over the weekend.
David adjusted his glasses, sliding a thick document across the polished surface toward Clara. “Mrs. Sterling, my client is prepared to offer a clean, amicable separation. A generous financial settlement will be provided upon the immediate signing of these non-disclosure and release forms, provided you vacate the penthouse by tomorrow evening.”
Clara didn’t touch the papers. She looked past the attorney straight into Marcus’s cold, guarded eyes. “And what are the grounds for this sudden separation, Marcus? Is it irreconcilable differences, or is it because your associate claimed I assaulted her in our own dining room?”
Marcus shifted uncomfortably in his leather chair, clearing his throat. “Clara, let’s not drag this down into a public spectacle. You lost control. Elena was simply defending herself.”
Clara’s attorney, a sharp woman named Sarah Jenkins, raised an eyebrow and opened a sleek black portfolio. She placed a single glossy photograph on the table, followed by a secure flash drive. “My client categorically denies those allegations. In fact, Mr. Sterling, we have independent, time-stamped video evidence from the dining room security system that tells a completely different story.”
David Vance reached for the photograph, his professional composure faltering slightly as he looked at the frame showing Elena aggressively shoving Clara into the glass table. David looked up at Marcus, his expression hardening. “Marcus, you didn’t mention there was video footage of the physical altercation.”
Marcus stared at the photograph, the color draining slightly from his face. “That’s… impossible. The internal feed was routed only to my secure terminal. Elena said the system malfunctioned during the scuffle.”

“Systems record everything, Mr. Sterling, especially high-end enterprise installations,” Sarah Jenkins said smoothly, her voice cutting through the heavy silence of the room. “The footage clearly shows Miss Vance initiating unprovoked physical violence, followed by immediate play-acting when your footsteps were heard approaching. Furthermore, our forensic accountants have been reviewing the foundation’s recent ledger adjustments. It appears over two million dollars in charitable assets have been systematically funneled into private accounts managed by an entity called Vanguard Holdings—an entity registered under Elena Vance’s maiden name.”
The room went dead silent. Marcus turned his head slowly toward David, demanding an explanation with his eyes, but the attorney was already examining the financial summaries with mounting horror. The illusion was beginning to fracture, and the true architect of the chaos was running out of time.
