Chapter 5

The metallic squawk of the handheld radio echoed sharply across the quiet garden. Detective Miller pressed two fingers to his earpiece, his face tightening into a grim scowl.

“Status on the vehicle?” Miller barked into his lapel mic.

“It rammed the barricade, sir! Airbags deployed, driver is on foot heading toward the marina docks!” the voice crackled back through static.

Christopher didn't wait for permission. He sprinted toward the eastern gate, his polished naval boots pounding against the gravel path. The betrayal, the shock, and the lingering terror in Lily’s eyes fused into a singular, driving purpose. No one threatened his family and walked away.

Rounding the corner of the venue’s main pavilion, the scene of chaos came into sharp focus. A black sedan was smashed sideways against the reinforced security gate, its hood smoking heavily, steam hissing into the cool afternoon air. A few yards away, a man in a dark hoodie was sprinting frantically toward the wooden docks where several luxury yachts were moored.

“Stop right there!” Christopher roared, his military cadence cutting through the coastal breeze like a whip.

The fleeing man glanced over his shoulder, his eyes wide with panic, and suddenly tripped over a loose mooring line, crashing hard onto the wooden planks of the dock. Christopher closed the distance in seconds, dropping heavily onto the man’s back and pinning him against the rough wood before he could regain his footing.

“Get your hands behind your back!” Christopher ordered, grabbing the man’s wrists and forcing them flat against the dock.

Detective Miller arrived moments later, breathless, pulling plastic zip-ties from his tactical belt to secure the suspect. As they hauled the man to his feet, Christopher stared into a face he recognized instantly—it was the catering manager Evelyn had hired for the wedding reception.

“You,” Christopher breathed, his grip tightening on the man’s collar. “You served my daughter cake yesterday.”

“I didn't know anything about the kid!” the caterer stammered, his face pale and bruised from the airbag deployment. “I’m just a courier! I was hired to deliver a hard drive to the boat!”

Miller searched the suspect's pockets, pulling out a heavy, encrypted external hard drive wrapped in a padded envelope. The detective plugged a small diagnostic cable from his pocket into the drive, his eyes widening as the screen on his handheld device flashed green.

“Well, look at that,” Miller muttered, holding up the drive. “Every encrypted naval logistics file from your home terminal, Commander. Downloaded less than an hour ago.”

Christopher stared at the small metal device, feeling the crushing weight of a security breach that could end his career and threaten national infrastructure. But as he looked out over the dark water where a sleek speedboat was currently cutting through the waves toward the open ocean, he realized the hard drive in his hand wasn't the end of the mystery. It was only a decoy.
