Chapter 2

The murmurs among the wedding guests died instantly as a tall man in a charcoal suit strode down the central aisle, ignoring the vacant white chairs on either side. He carried a bulky manila envelope under one arm, his expression grave and unsmiling. Evelyn turned sharply toward the newcomer, her panic no longer feigned, her breath catching audibly in her throat as she recognized the intruder.
“You,” Evelyn whispered, her voice tightening into a dangerous hiss that barely carried past the first row of chairs.
Christopher shifted Lily to his other arm, his eyes narrowing as he assessed the stranger. “Who are you, and what business do you have here?”
“My name is Detective Miller,” the man replied, stopping a few feet away from the altar. He flicked a cold glance at Evelyn before looking directly at Christopher. “I’m here because your daughter isn't the only one Evelyn has locked away, Commander. And the laundry room is just the beginning of her logistical achievements.”
Evelyn lunged forward, her yellow lace dress rustling violently. “Get out of here! This is a private event! Christopher, don’t listen to this lunatic, he’s a disgruntled former tenant!”
“Tenant?” Detective Miller raised an eyebrow, pulling a stack of official documents from the envelope. “Is that what you call the elderly people whose retirement accounts you drained before attempting to ship them out of state?”
Lily buried her face into Christopher’s white uniform jacket, her small shoulders trembling. Christopher patted her back gently, his hand firm and reassuring, while his eyes remained fixed on Evelyn. The warmth of the garden suddenly felt suffocating, the floral arrangements smelling sickeningly sweet.
“Show me,” Christopher demanded quietly.
Detective Miller didn’t hesitate. He handed the top document directly to the groom. Christopher glanced down, his eyes scanning the certified bank records, power-of-attorney forms bearing forged signatures, and a property deed signed over just three days prior. The name on the fraudulent documents wasn't Evelyn’s; it belonged to an alias Christopher had never heard of.
“She was using your clean military record as a shield,” Miller explained, his voice cutting through the stunned silence of the garden. “Your wedding was the final step in establishing a bulletproof domestic profile before she emptied your personal accounts and disappeared.”

Evelyn stepped back, her heels sinking slightly into the manicured lawn. The mask of the blushing bride had completely shattered, revealing a cold, calculating stranger. “You're ruining everything,” she spat, her voice dripping with venom.
Christopher slowly lowered the papers. He looked down at Lily, realizing just how close he had come to bringing a predator into his home. But before he could issue a command for security, Evelyn’s phone buzzed aggressively in the hidden pocket of her yellow dress.
