Chapter 4: The Knock on the Door

Before Clara could process the chilling implication of David’s words, a sharp, authoritative knock echoed from the front entryway. It wasn't the friendly, double-tap rap of a neighbor dropping by to borrow a lawnmower or invite Leo over for a playdate. It was a heavy, deliberate, three-part knock that demanded immediate submission. Clara froze, her eyes snapping from David to the front door across the room. David stood up instantly, his movements silent and urgent. He grabbed the remaining papers off the coffee table, shoving them haphazardly back into the leather pouch and kicking the shattered pieces of the ceramic vase over the hole in the floorboards to hide the dark opening. Stay here, he whispered, his voice trembling as he backed toward the hallway. Don't open your mouth. Don't let them see Leo. Another knock, louder this time, rattled the deadbolt in its frame. David vanished down the hall, presumably to check the back window or secure the kitchen exit, leaving Clara alone in the wreckage of the living room. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She looked down at her brown sleeveless jumpsuit, suddenly feeling acutely vulnerable standing out in the open. She crept toward the hallway entrance, keeping her footsteps light, trying to listen to the muffled murmurs coming from the foyer. Through the heavy wooden door, a deep, unfamiliar voice spoke with chilling politeness. Good afternoon, Mr. Hayes. We're looking for someone who might have left a few things behind a long time ago. We know you're home. We saw your car in the driveway. Clara’s breath caught in her throat. There were at least two men out there, judging by the overlapping cadence of their boots on the concrete porch. David’s voice came back, strained but remarkably firm. You have the wrong house. My name is David Hayes. I've lived here for seven years. I suggest you leave before I call the local sheriff. A low, dry laugh answered him through the wood. The sheriff isn't coming today, Mr. Hayes. We checked with him. He's tied up across town with a staged traffic accident. Now, are you going to open this door nicely, or do we need to introduce ourselves through the glass? Clara heard the distinct metallic click of a heavy object sliding against the doorframe. Panic surged through her veins, overriding her fear. She couldn't let them corner David in the hallway. She needed to reach Leo, secure the back of the house, and figure out a way out before these men turned their quiet suburban life into a slaughterhouse.
