Chapter 14: The Final Stand

Julian Vance’s chief security officer slammed his shoulder against the heavy wooden door of the broadcast booth, splintering the frame and throwing the latch violently inward. The burly man stepped into the room, his hand reaching instinctively inside his tailored jacket toward a concealed shoulder holster. David didn't flinch. With a fierce, defiant push of his palm, he slammed his finger down onto the enter key of the master console, watching the status bar on the monitor flash green as the entire encrypted file transferred successfully to every national news network. Upload complete, the screen blinked brightly. The security guard drew his weapon, his eyes narrowing with cold fury as he leveled the black pistol directly at David. Step away from the console, Hayes. It's over. You're not walking out of here. Clara reacted before David could move, grabbing a heavy metal microphone stand from the nearby desk and swinging it with all her remaining strength, catching the guard squarely across the arm and knocking the pistol clattering harmlessly to the carpeted floor. The guard swore, lunging forward to grab Clara, but David tackled him fiercely around the waist, sending both men crashing hard into the rows of empty control chairs. The struggle was brief and brutal, ending when the heavy security operative hit his head against the edge of a steel desk and slumped unconscious to the floor. Outside in the main auditorium, the applause for Julian Vance suddenly began to falter as anchor desks across national television networks abruptly interrupted their live coverage of the speech, flashing breaking news banners across screens nationwide: Massive Financial Fraud Scandal Rocks Senate Campaign; Documents Link Candidate to Offshore Slush Funds. Down on the stage, Julian Vance stopped mid-sentence, his charismatic smile freezing on his face as his earpiece buzzed frantically with panicked reports from his campaign managers. Sirens began to wail in the distance outside the convention center, growing louder by the second as local police and federal investigators mobilized in response to the massive data leak. David stood up, breathing heavily, his blue denim shirt torn and stained with dust, but his expression radiant with a profound, unburdened peace. He walked over to where Leo stood safely beside Clara, kneeling down to wrap his arms around his family in a fierce, unbreakable embrace. It's over, buddy, David whispered against his son's hair. We're finally free.
