Chapter 15

The gala reception wound down as midnight approached, the guests drifting away into the crisp Chicago night until only three people remained on the terrace. Maya, Julian, and Clara stood together near the center of the stone patio, wrapped in coats against the late autumn chill, watching the reflection of the moon dance across the dark expanse of Lake Michigan.
There was no tension left between them, no hidden agendas, no unspoken resentments waiting to surface in the dark. The journey from that chaotic, terrifying hospital room months ago had been long and arduous, testing every boundary of their endurance, but it had ultimately forged a bond that nothing could break.
"Are you ready to head home?" Julian asked, looking between his wife and sister-in-law.
Maya smiled, leaning her head comfortably against Julian’s shoulder. "Lead the way, husband. I believe we've earned a quiet weekend with zero corporate drama."
Clara laughed, gathering her handbag strap over her shoulder. "I'll second that. In fact, I propose a strict rule for the weekend: no business, no legal briefs, and absolutely no red evening gowns."

Julian chuckled, offering his free arm to Clara while keeping his other arm securely around Maya. "Agreed. Ordinary clothes and ordinary conversation only."
As the three of them turned and walked side by side toward the exit doors of the institute, the heavy oak doors swung open smoothly without a single hitch. The warm light from the lobby spilled out over the pavement, illuminating their path forward. They walked together as a unified family—not defined by the tragedies of their past or the conspiracies that had tried to tear them apart, but by the conscious, daily choice to stand by one another through every trial. The shattered glass on the hospital floor had marked the end of their illusions, but it had also marked the beginning of their true redemption. The circle was unbroken, the future was bright, and for the first time in their lives, they were walking directly into the light.
