Chapter 6: Cornered Rat

The beam of Julian’s flashlight held Marcus pinned against the mahogany desk like a specimen under a microscope. Marcus’s hands trembled visibly as they hovered above the open drawer, his eyes darting frantically toward the broken balcony doors that led out into the humid night air. The room was choked with tension, the air thick with the scent of cheap whiskey and panic.

"Step away from the desk, Marcus," Julian commanded, his voice unnervingly calm, carrying the quiet menace of a predator ready to strike.

Marcus let out a nervous, breathless laugh, slowly withdrawing his hands and raising them defensively. "Julian, cousin! Put the hero act away. You think you've solved some grand mystery, don't you? You think you've rescued the poor little lost princess."

"You stole my daughter," Eleanor said, stepping past Julian into the light. Her voice was ice-cold, stripped of all maternal warmth, cutting through the room with razor-like precision. She stared at her nephew with an intensity that made him flinch. "You and your father orchestrated a kidnapping, faked a tragedy, and forced a child to live a lie under our own roof for ten years. For what, Marcus? Greed?"

"Greed?" Marcus sneered, his mask of civility finally slipping away to reveal the bitter, desperate man beneath. "It was about survival! Richard knew you and your husband were running the foundation into the ground with your reckless philanthropy. We just... redirected the lineage to secure our stake in the empire. Clara was never supposed to know. She was just supposed to be a convenient pawn until we consolidated the board votes."

Julian lunged forward, grabbing Marcus by the lapels of his rumpled suit and slamming him against the wood-paneled wall. The impact knocked the wind out of Marcus, who gasped for air as Julian’s knuckles pressed firmly against his throat.

"Where are the rest of the transfer records?" Julian demanded, his eyes flashing with fury. "Who else signed off on the adoption fraud?"

"Go to hell," Marcus choked out, a defiant grin staining his lips with spit. "You... you'll never see the full portfolio. The digital keys are already en route to our offshore partners. By morning, the Vance accounts will be wiped clean."

Eleanor placed a firm hand on Julian’s shoulder, pulling him back just enough to prevent him from crossing a line they couldn't uncross. She stepped closer to Marcus, her eyes narrowing as she studied his terrified expression. She knew Marcus too well; he was a coward who loved luxury far more than martyrdom.

"You're lying, Marcus," Eleanor said softly, leaning in close. "You wouldn't surrender control of your escape funds unless you had already secured passage out of the country. And you haven't left yet. The car is still in the south garage."

Marcus’s bravado fractured instantly. His eyes widened in sheer terror as he realized the matriarch had seen right through his bluff.
