Chapter 2: Shadows in the Ballroom

Julian’s gaze swept across the sea of tuxedoed men and silk-gowned women lining the perimeter of the magnificent ballroom. The festive atmosphere had completely curdled, replaced by an uncomfortable, suffocating tension. Whispers buzzed like angry hornets among the guests who had moments ago clinked champagne flutes in blissful ignorance. Eleanor remained huddled on the marble floor, her brown satin dress pooled around her knees like melted chocolate, refusing to let go of Clara. The young girl in the red lace dress clutched the green jade pendant to her chest, her small heart hammering against her ribs as she looked up at Julian for reassurance.
"Get the doors locked," Julian commanded in a low, dangerous tone, locking eyes with the head of estate security near the entrance. The burly guard nodded briskly, signaling his men to secure every exit. No one was leaving the Sterling Estate until Julian found out who had planted Clara into their lives with a counterfeit identity a decade ago.
Eleanor slowly regained her composure, wiping her tear-stained cheeks with the back of a trembling hand. She stood up with Julian’s assistance, her posture straightening with the formidable grace that had defined her decades as the matriarch of the Vance family. She looked down at Clara, whose emerald-flecked eyes mirrored her own. The physical resemblance, masked for years by clever styling and forged birth certificates, was now undeniable.
"Who brought her to us, Julian?" Eleanor asked, her voice steady despite the lingering tremor in her lips.
May you like
"Marcus Vance," Julian replied grimly, naming his cousin who had managed the family's charitable foundations ten years ago. "He claimed her parents died in a suburban fire and that we were her designated guardians."
Marcus, however, was nowhere to be seen in the ballroom. Julian’s eyes narrowed as he scanned the crowd again. The coward must have slipped out the side terrace the moment the jade pendant shattered against the marble floor. Eleanor gripped her son's arm, her diamond necklace catching the dimming light as security officers began checking invitations and sealing the perimeter. The revelation was not merely a family reunion; it was an exposure of deep-seated betrayal from within their own inner circle. They needed to move Clara to a secure room immediately, away from the prying eyes and flashing cameras of the opportunistic press gathered beyond the wrought-iron gates.
