Chapter 8

The Vance Industries boardroom occupied the entire top floor of the downtown corporate tower, a glass-walled citadel suspended four hundred feet above the grey expanse of the city. The morning sun poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting long, geometric shadows across the polished walnut conference table that stretched thirty feet down the center of the room. Seven members of the board of directors sat in high-backed leather chairs, their expressions a mix of nervous anticipation and corporate exhaustion.

Victoria Vance sat at the head of the table in the seat traditionally reserved for the managing director. She wore a tailored charcoal-gray pantsuit that gleamed with expensive subtlety, her blonde hair pulled back into a severe, immaculate chignon. On her right pinky finger, the platinum signet ring caught the morning light every time she made a precise, clipped gesture with her pen. She was reviewing a printed portfolio of short-selling transactions when the heavy double doors at the end of the boardroom swung open with a pneumatic hiss.

All heads turned toward the entrance. Victoria didn't look up immediately, assuming the arriving party was simply another nervous associate bringing bad news about the missing diamond collateral.

"We don't have time for delays, Sterling," Victoria said, her voice sharp and ringing with artificial authority. "The emergency proxy vote was scheduled for eight-thirty. If Julian lacks the stomach to face the shareholders after his catastrophic failure last night, the board will proceed with my appointment as interim CEO by default."

"Julian is right here, Victoria," Clara’s voice cut through the cavernous room, cold, clear, and carrying an absolute, unshakeable resonance that silenced the murmuring directors instantly.

Victoria finally lifted her head, her sharp blue eyes narrowing as she took in the scene before her. Julian walked through the double doors first, his posture upright, his expression grim and stripped of its usual defensive arrogance. Behind him walked Clara, her hand resting protectively on the shoulder of nine-year-old Lily, who looked around the vast, imposing room with wide, curious eyes. Bringing up the rear was Sterling, his leather briefcase tucked securely under his arm, flanked by two men in dark suits bearing federal credentials clipped to their lapels.

Victoria’s composure faltered for a fraction of a second, a micro-expression of panic flashing across her high cheekbones before she quickly masked it behind a cold, dismissive smile.

"What is the meaning of this theatrical display?" Victoria demanded, standing up from her chair and leaning her palms flat against the walnut table. "Why are there federal agents in a private board meeting? And why is that child here? Security should have removed her from the premises hours ago."

"Sit down, Victoria," Julian said, his voice dropping into a quiet, gravelly baritone that commanded the room in a way his shouting never could. He walked to the opposite end of the table, standing directly across from his sister. "The only person leaving this room in handcuffs today is you."
