Chapter 5

The digital glow of the laptop screen cast long, skeletal shadows across the walls of the east parlor as Clara tapped the enter key. The encrypted file from the ballroom's security server loaded with a soft, digitized chime. Sterling had secured the room, locking the heavy double doors from the inside and drawing the thick velvet drapes to shut out the mocking glare of the security lights outside. Lily had finally drifted off to sleep, curled safely on the divan under Clara's blue wool blanket, her breathing deep and even.

Julian sat in a high-backed leather wing chair across from the desk, staring blankly at his polished black shoes. The fire in his eyes had flickered out, leaving behind the gray ash of exhaustion. He looked ten years older than he had when the night began, his broad shoulders slumped beneath the invisible weight of his impending financial and legal ruin.

"Let's see what else was captured on that loop," Clara said quietly, her fingers dancing across the keyboard. She didn't harbor any triumph; her expression was one of grim, clinical detachment.

The high-definition video file opened smoothly, defaulting to the exact timestamp of the gala's climax. On the screen, the camera angles were startlingly clear. The first shot showed Julian stepping out of the shadows near the service doors, his movements calculated and predatory as he approached the terrified little girl. The audio, enhanced by the server's directional microphones, picked up every inflection.

“Get back the ring, you little thief!” Julian’s recorded voice boomed from the laptop speakers, sounding harsh and devoid of human empathy in the quiet parlor.

Julian winced at the sound, closing his eyes and pressing the heels of his hands against his temples as if he could physically block out the past.

"Skip ahead to the second file," Sterling instructed, leaning over the back of Clara’s chair. His voice was devoid of judgment, pure business as always. "The one timestamped twenty-two minutes prior to the gala starting. That’s when the estate cameras logged someone tampering with the display case in the East Gallery."

Clara clicked the mouse, navigating the directory tree until she found the corresponding file. She hit play. The screen flickered, displaying the amber-hued footage of the East Gallery, a vaulted corridor lined with ancestral portraits and glass display plinths. For the first time that evening, the mystery of the Hope Diamond's precarious position on the ballroom floor began to unravel.

The grainy, high-contrast night-vision footage showed a tall figure in a dark tailored suit—indistinguishable at first glance from Julian’s own evening wear—approaching the velvet-lined pedestal where the heirloom rested. The figure didn't pick the lock; instead, a gloved hand deftly disabled the micro-sensor alarm using an override code that only three people in the entire organization possessed: Julian, Sterling, and Victoria Vance, Julian’s estranged older sister and the company’s chief financial officer.
