Chapter 6 - The Elevator Doors

The heavy brass doors of the service elevator slid open with a deep, pneumatic sigh, revealing a dimly lit shaft lined with exposed brick and emergency maintenance panels. Cool air rushed out from the dark interior, carrying the faint scent of ozone and old dust that contrasted sharply with the expensive perfume lingering in the hallway. Clara backed toward the open threshold, her eyes darting between Marcus, who looked ready to bolt, and Vance, whose hand was now firmly gripping the handle of his service weapon.

“Stay right where you are, Clara, or you’ll leave this building in a body bag,” Vance hissed, taking a slow, deliberate step forward while his fingers danced anxiously over his lapel.

Elena slowly pushed herself up from the checkered floor, brushing non-existent dust from her shimmering gold gown with a cold, terrifying calm that completely belied her earlier injuries. The stage blood on her shoulder was already drying into a tacky, dark brown crust, exposing the blatant trickery of the entire attack.

“You really think a federal feed is going to save you, Clara?” Elena asked smoothly, her voice dropping all pretense of pain as she stepped gracefully over a pile of shattered glass. “Vance cleared the servers an hour ago. There is no feed.”

Clara’s heart pounded against her ribs as she realized the green light on the detective’s lapel had just flickered and died, replaced by a dull, dead black plastic housing. She had walked right into a trap, relying on a failsafe that her enemies had already anticipated and neutralized.

“You’re both going down for embezzlement, and no amount of cover-up will change the federal audits,” Clara said, her voice steady despite the sheer terror gripping her throat.

She took a half-step backward into the dark elevator cab, her hand fumbling frantically along the emergency control panel for the manual override switch, only to find the entire panel completely wired shut with heavy copper jumper cables.
