Chapter 3 - The Approaching Footsteps

The rhythmic clicking of heavy leather shoes echoed down the long, empty corridor, each step sounding like a hammer blow against Clara’s racing heart. Marcus froze mid-motion, his hand still pressing his tuxedo jacket against Elena’s gold-clad shoulder, his eyes darting anxiously toward the shadowed archway at the end of the hall. The red indicator light on the ceiling security camera suddenly stopped blinking and glowed a solid, unyielding crimson, bathing the entire scene in a harsh, theatrical glow.

“Marcus, get the bag,” Elena hissed, her previous weakness vanishing in an instant as she grabbed his wrist with surprising strength.

Clara pushed herself up onto her feet, wincing as a shard of glass dislodged from her shoe and fell to the floor with a tiny, sharp tinkle. Her mind raced through the maze of corridors in the mansion, calculating escape routes while the heavy footsteps grew closer, accompanied by the distinct jingling of silver keys. This was no ordinary security guard making a routine round; this was Detective Vance, the man Marcus had secretly paid off to ensure any financial irregularities in the corporate accounts were quietly buried.

“You can’t hide this forever,” Clara said, her voice steadying as she stood tall in her ruined red dress, meeting Marcus’s panicked gaze with unyielding defiance.

Marcus stood up slowly, stepping over the puddle of artificial blood that now coated the checkered tiles, his face flushing with a dangerous mix of anger and fear. He reached inside his tuxedo jacket, his fingers brushing the hidden flash drive while his eyes flicked back and forth between Clara and the approaching figure in the shadows.

“Shut up, Clara, or you won’t live to see the sunrise,” Marcus muttered under his breath, stepping forward as if to block her path to the exit.

A tall figure stepped out from the darkness of the archway, adjusting the lapels of a charcoal trench coat and flashing a brass badge that caught the harsh red light of the ceiling camera. Detective Vance surveyed the chaotic scene with an air of practiced boredom, his eyes lingering on Elena’s staged wound before locking onto Clara with an accusatory squint.

“Well, well, what do we have here?” Vance drawled, pulling a small leather notebook from his pocket and flicking it open with a sharp snap.
