Chapter 9: The Treasury’s Secret Line

The vibration of the satellite phone in Clara’s coat felt like a heavy weight dragging her deeper into a storm she wasn’t sure she could survive. She pulled the device out, the screen glowing with an amber classification stamp that made Arthur Pendelton’s eyes widen in disbelief. It wasn’t a standard federal agency call; it carried the triple-red security banner reserved only for the President’s inner intelligence advisory council.
“Answer it,” Arthur whispered, his voice tense. “If that’s who I think it is, we’ve just crossed a line from local law enforcement into national security.”
Clara pressed the accept button and brought the phone to her ear, shielding the speaker from the biting wind with her hand. “This is Clara Vance.”
“Ms. Vance,” a deep, gravelly voice echoed through the earpiece, carrying the absolute authority of a man accustomed to having his orders executed without question. “My name is Director Vance—no relation to your detective friend. I am speaking to you from a secure bunker beneath Washington, D.C. You have approximately twelve minutes before the international banking collapse you triggered causes a total liquidity freeze across the G7 nations.”
Clara didn’t flinch. She stood tall on the freezing rooftop, her posture rigid beneath Arthur’s wool coat. “Then unfreeze the legitimate accounts and leave the Sterling holdings locked. The evidence is on the server we just seized.”
“The server you seized is currently burning through its cooling reservoirs in a federal data center because your shutdown script triggered an automated thermal purge,” Director Vance replied evenly. “The digital evidence is evaporating, Ms. Vance. Which means the only proof of Julian Sterling’s global syndicate exists in one place: the physical archive located beneath his private estate in Greenwich, Connecticut.”
Arthur, who had been listening closely over the speaker bleed, shook his head violently. “Greenwich? That estate is private federal property leased under diplomatic immunity statutes! We can’t just walk in there without a presidential warrant, and drafting one takes days!”
“You don’t have days, Counselor,” Director Vance said over the line. “You have hours before Julian’s international partners realize he’s detained and send cleanup crews to wipe the estate clean. Ms. Vance, you have the keys to the physical vault encoded in your memory, don’t you?”
Clara stared down at little Leo, who was fast asleep, breathing softly against her chest. Going back into the lion’s den—stepping foot onto the very estate where Julian had kept her prisoner for forty-eight hours three years ago—felt like walking straight into an executioner’s block. But looking at her son’s bruised, innocent face, she knew there was no other choice. If they didn’t finish this tonight, the Sterling network would simply reboot under a new name, and the next time, there would be no mercy.
“I know the way into the vault,” Clara said into the phone, her voice steady and resolute. “Send a transport to the roof right now. We’re going to Greenwich.”
Director Vance paused for a single beat. “Transport is already lifting off from the New Jersey airfield. ETA to your rooftop is four minutes. Pack light, Ms. Vance. You’re walking into the heart of the beast.”

The call disconnected with a sharp click. Clara lowered the phone, looking at Arthur and Marcus, who had just returned from securing the stairwell.
“We’re going to Greenwich,” Clara said, her eyes gleaming with cold determination.
