Chapter 1: The Ledge and the Ultimatum

The freezing night wind whipped off the Manhattan skyline, sending ripples across the surface of the champagne in Victoria Sterling’s crystal glass. Below her, the glittering lights of the metropolis pulsed like a digital heartbeat, indifferent to the human wreckage on the concrete. Victoria adjusted the strap of her glittering gold, off-the-shoulder metallic gown, making sure the diamond necklace caught the amber glow of the rooftop lanterns. She looked down with cold detachment at Clara Vance, who was kneeling on the hard, frost-covered roof. Clara’s blue satin blazer was torn, stained with dark oil and smeared with blood from a jagged cut across her pale forehead. Clutched tightly against Clara’s chest was her five-year-old son, Leo, whose face was buried in her shoulder as he sobbed in raw, unbroken terror. Victoria took a deliberate, slow breath of the crisp air, her golden updo flawless despite the gale.

“Get her out of here,” Victoria said, her voice cutting through the wind with icy precision. “It's over for you.”

Clara slowly lifted her head. The bruising around her left eye was turning a deep, angry purple, but her tearful eyes burned with an incandescent fury that made Victoria’s breath hitch for a fraction of a second. Clara tightened her grip on the weeping child, shielding him from the biting draft.

“You just made the biggest mistake of your life,” Clara whispered, every word loaded with lethal finality.

Victoria didn’t flinch. Instead, she raised the crystal glass to her lips, tilting her head back to take a slow, unhurried sip of the vintage champagne. A smug, victorious smile crept across her painted lips, mocking Clara’s desperate posture.

“Mistake?” Victoria murmured, lowering the glass. “Clara, darling, you were a footnote. A glitch I am finally deleting.”

Clara didn’t scream or cry. Her hands shook, not from weakness, but from the adrenaline surge of survival. With trembling, blood-stained fingers, she pulled a sleek black cell phone from her inner pocket, her thumb pressing the speed dial with terrifying speed. She brought the screen to her ear, staring directly into Victoria’s mocking eyes while the American flag snapped violently against the metal pole behind them.

“Shut down all their locations in five minutes!” Clara barked into the phone, her voice echoing off the concrete. “Freeze every account!”

Victoria’s smug smile instantly vanished, replaced by an expression of sheer, unadulterated terror as her phone began to vibrate violently in her evening bag.
