Chapter 2

The cracked smartphone lay on the marble countertop like a ticking time bomb waiting for the right moment to detonate. Elena’s gaze flicked back toward the device, magnetized by the faint blue glow emanating from beneath the shattered glass surface. Margaret, blinded by her fierce determination to control the narrative of the household, failed to notice the subtle shift in Elena’s attention. Daniel shifted his weight slightly on the wooden stool, the faint creak of the leather cushion breaking the tense silence of the expansive kitchen.

With a swift, decisive movement that caught Margaret off guard, Elena reached out her trembling hand and picked up the smartphone. Her fingers traced the rough edges of the cracked glass. The screen displayed an active video playback interface, complete with a progress bar and a prominent white play button resting squarely in the center. Without pausing to consider the consequences, Elena pressed her thumb against the screen, activating the audio.

Immediately, the bright kitchen was filled with the grainy, slightly distorted image of a video call frame. An older man appeared on the small screen, his face lined with age and severe worry. He spoke with an urgent, hurried whisper, as if recording from a place of great danger.

“Don’t trust Margaret,” the man on the phone screen warned, his eyes staring straight through the pixelated display into Elena’s soul. “Daniel’s first wife did not die in an accident.”

The words hung in the air, cold and heavy as lead. Elena froze, her breath catching in her throat as the horrifying implication began to sink into her consciousness. She turned her wide, terrified eyes from the screen to the older woman standing across the island. Margaret’s face had drained of all color, her aggressive posture instantly collapsing into defensive panic.

Elena stared intensely at the phone screen, the pieces of a dark, sinister puzzle finally clicking into place in her mind. She realized with sudden, terrifying clarity that the bruise on her face was only the tip of a much deeper, deadlier iceberg. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Daniel watching her from behind the island, his expression completely unreadable.

“What did you both know?” Elena demanded, her voice cutting through the silence like a knife, directing her furious question at the two people who had systematically imprisoned her in this gilded cage. Margaret opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out, the ironclad control she usually maintained completely shattered by the digital ghost from the past.
